Write 4 Gold 2009
Write4Gold, the world's biggest graffiti competition, that finally came to New Zealand, South Africa, USA or Great Britain in order to give crews the chance to showcase their talents and represent their country in the finals. For 7 years, the agency CSF Media from Chemnitz organises that unique project in the field of youth events. Write4Gold that means "being creative for the first place" took place for the first time in 2003. In those days, it was known as the first national aerosol art event tour. Since 2004, the event has taken place in whole Europe and also worldwide. Every year, the Write4Gold tries to feature the best and most innovative graffiti crews from all over the world. The event wants to show what's possible to create with a spray can and support a development in accepting this fascinating kind of art by the public. Write4Gold offers participating artists and visitors a regular happening worldwide made for all creative people who want to show their talents, exchange experiences and get to know each other. A pool of international jurors and capable partners in the respective countries will be on the agency's side in the summer when the Write4Gold goes on. Every crew in the world has the opportunity to register on the official Write4Gold website. The eight to ten crews who will be qualified for the respective qualification round are chosen by a special selection procedure.

@ CISA Gallery Hammond, IN – June 19, 2009 – CISA Gallery is hosting an opening reception for the exhibition, Inspired Creatures, featuring the work of Switch One and Rone. Switch and Rone’s work represents the latest wave of graffiti writers pursuing further education in fine art. Young graffiti writers, once in fine art schools, constantly battle the choice of direction with their work as they mature from student to fine artist. Rone’s photorealistic illustrations are sick. Switch has some of cleanest and brightest stencil work in the Midwest. Both artists hit the walls together. The graffiti collaborations are evident in the overall balance of the exhibit. CISA Gallery opened its door in February 2007. CISA Gallery is an extension of CISA Studio, a multimedia graphics art company. CISA Gallery objectives include: Providing a platform for emerging & established artists to showcase their work Expanding the local network of artists Showcasing new perspectives and ideas in art Play an integral role in establishing a vibrant art community in the Tri-City area. Blow Up HoustonOpening Reception Friday, June 26th, 2009 7pm to 11pm Aerosol Warfare has teamed up with toy designer Jamungo to bring you a unique exhibition featuring customized urban vinyl toys. Through a “first-come – first-served” open call, 50 “Blow Up Dolls” were obtained by local artists, photographers, graphic designers, and other creative types with the mission of customizing their dolls and bringing them to life! The result? A dynamic exhibition: “Blow Up Houston”! At the center of it all lies Jamungo’s “Blow Up Dolls” which come in two varieties: NADE (who has a grenade as a head) and BUD (who’s head is an old school bomb with a fuse and match stick). These toys are 9” tall and made of rotocast vinyl, so they are light, hollow and ready for DYI! All artwork will be on display at Aerosol Warfare Gallery & Boutique, opening Friday, June 26th, on display through July 31st. About Aerosol Warfare Gallery & Boutique: Aerosol Warfare is Houston’s only street/urban artist gallery and street fashion boutique. Asian Arts Initiative Hailing from metropolitan hubs throughout the country—Philadelphia, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington D.C.—these artists will share exciting work in a variety of mediums and styles that demonstrate a nationwide convergence toward a fresh contemporary sensibility with an urban edge: Pose II, Joshua Maze, Dave Cramske, Isaac Lin, Rodney Camarce, Jesse Olanday, Sun You, Figments by Ciriaco, Anjni Raol, Shin Ae Tassia, Chanika Svetla, Bret Syfert, Junghwa O’Connell, Miss Tina Wong, Teel MUL, and Dan “R5” Barojas. Urban Convergence is curated by Jeff Cylkowski, a Korean American adoptee and Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary painter, muralist, and hip-hop artist. Before receiving a formal art education from the Pratt Institute, he spent years immersed in urban subcultures. The spirit of that experience continues to inform his work today. In summer 2009, he will be Artist-in-Residence at the Asian Arts Initiative. His residency will include a six-week series of painting and mural-making workshops with local youth in partnership with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, beginning July 6 and culminating with an exhibition of new work on August 14, 2009. « Les Pragois, Prague-Paris Street art workshop »Le Street art est l’art de l’espace urbain : inspiré par le milieu des villes, il sublime celui-ci, ici par une installation imposante, là par quelque élément ludique, passant presque inaperçu au passant moins attentif. L’affiche, le sticker, le pochoir, la peinture, la mosaïque, l’installation… aucun moyen d’expression ne lui est étranger. Il a par ailleurs le grand mérite de réactiver deux dimensions essentielles pour l’art moderne : l’anonymat et la fugacité. Par définition, il est certes curieux que cet art de la rue s’expose dans les galeries. Loin de vouloir présenter des artefacts figés, le Centre tchèque a décidé d’organiser un workshop, invitant certains des plus importants créateurs du Street art tchèque (entre autres : Point, Bior et Tron) et français (Stak, Honet, Samuel-Francois...) a investir librement l’espace du Centre et de ses alentours. La présente exposition en sera le fruit. Par ailleurs, nous vous invitons à visiter le Centre les jours précédant le vernissage pour voir les artistes au travail ! As part of Arts in Bushwick's Bushwick Open Studios, panelists come together to discuss topics concerning community murals in New York City, what works on the wall and what doesn't, community involvement, as well as exploring the rich history of community murals in Brooklyn and its future prospects.
The Mac and Retna
Mid-City Arts is proud to present a live painting event and exhibit opening featuring two of Los Angeles’ most respected graffiti artists: Retna and The Mac. The opening event takes place Sunday June 7th 12pm – 6pm at 33Third. The art exhibit will be on display in the adjoining Mid-City Arts gallery, which recently hosted the first ever gallery exhibit from Chaka, LA’s most infamous graffiti writer. The new exhibit from Retna and The Mac will featured a large-scale indoor mural installation in addition to smaller pieces. Retna says that the show “will be representative of the remembrance of growing up as a youth.” They will aim to re-enact “the trials & triumphs of pursuing an art form that you have all this passion for, but yet angers all these people. Just kind of showing the 2 different sides to it.” This is a topic near and dear to the artists’ hearts, echoing sentiments shared by many of today’s successful artists who have transitioned from graffiti to legitimate street art. “This is where we came from. We came from being these street kids. We wanted to show that you can keep going,” explains Retna. “It's a beautiful thing to be a part of a culture like this that has spread throughout the world and this would be our way of giving back to an area, a city, a community that was the beginning of my career (Mid-City Area of Los Angeles). Those blocks and corners were where I was given the opportunity to do my art and was shown a lot of support by the community. Communities like these are where we come from and it feels good to give something back to the future generation of kids doing this.”

The event will take place in a massive warehouse space in the heart of Shoreditch and will see over 40 of the finest free hand aerosol artists take to the boards and paint. The theme this year is ‘beyond materialism’ and is set to be an unmissable demonstration of some of the finest and most accomplished in aerosol art to hit London all year. The event will incorporate installations of artwork on walls, canvases and boards and once completed will provide the setting for the afterparty. SARTORIAL CONTEMPORARY ART In his first major London solo show the King of Crocs showcases his diverse talent at Sartorial Contemporary Art. Expect to see Rowdy’s unique take on urban living and landscape in the form of his legendary boulders, abstract cityscapes and of course the ubiquitous crocs. Bricks and mortar may mean money and mortgages to some but Rowdy prefers his building blocks in their raw state. ‘The local quarry provides the bedrock for our roads and cities’ says the artist. ‘I hit the rocks before they reach their destiny of becoming our new urban spaces’. Simultaneously caveman-esque and contemporary, the cartoon monoliths have been described as ‘Ren & Stimpy meets Goldsworthy’. Their arrival in the urban landscape provides jarring juxtaposition. His Cityscape paintings show Skyscrapers constructed out of the tiniest marks a spray can can make, reminiscent of T.S Lowry’s ‘matchstick men’, combined with 1980’s graffiti fades. Some are hectic, others more meditative. Highly sought after, this accomplished series offers nuances and subtleties both in style and substance, often somewhat lacking in today’s saturated street art market. Continuing the narrative of City versus The Ancient; Rowdy’s trademark crocodiles are often huge in scale and are indicative of the playful nature of the imagery in his work, and long may we continue to see these King-sized crocs attacking our walls and lurking in the concrete swamps. The last few years have seen him collaborate with cohorts Cyclops & Sweet Toof resulting in one of the most widespread bombing campaigns seen in the UK’s capital in the last decade.

Show & Tell Gallery is proud to welcome back Ryan Dineen for his second solo exhibit with the gallery. Ryan’s latest body of work, titled ‘In The Peripheral’, is a study of his daily observations of city environments and the people that inhabit them. This unique look on society focuses on elements of every day life that are often missed, ignored, or disregarded. Ryan strives to capture the beauty in the mundane and portray empathy in his subjects. The process often begins with a photo reference provided by neighborhood scenery and characters. Ryan engages his subjects, taking the time to learning more about their past and find out what they are all about. He then takes to the studio where he begins to translate their stories through his paintings. Ryan attains to capture the emotion behind the subjects he paints, hoping that the viewer is able to feel the personal connection he has with the subject matter. ‘In the Peripheral’ is an honest look at the city environment we live in. “I look at this series as my way of communicating my surroundings. I want to portray the charisma and individuality of my subject matter to the viewers, all the while leaving them to ultimately decipher their own feelings towards the work. Hopefully, they may feel a personal connection to my art. This body of work is all about people and things you see everyday, that guy on the street you pass on your way to work, the well to do lady having a smoke out side of the bank, they all have a story to tell. I try and tell that story as honestly as possible, I never want to undermine the viewer, it is important they make their own connection, I just hope that they can appreciate the beauty in it.” Ryan Dineen was born in Toronto in 1983. As a child, Ryan was first inspired to paint by his mother who was a part time illustrator; cartoons, handwriting, and signatures all stimulated his young mind. Graffiti was a natural progression, an art form that he was first introduced to by a babysitter at the age of 9. She taught him the essence of the misunderstood practice and encouraged him to develop his own style. Ryan embraced it full force. It wasn’t until he entered high school that he began to translate his artistic talents to canvas, learning classical techniques while exploring various mediums. All the while continuing his progression as a graffiti writer, he also started to develop his style on canvas. After high school Ryan had a brief stint at The Ontario College of Art and Design, finding the school structure limiting, Ryan opted to drop out to pursue studying on his own terms. Taking influence from masters like John Singer Sargent and Egon Shiele, as well as more modern contemporaries such as Ralph Steadman and Malcolm Liepke, Ryan began to develop his own approach to fine art. His personal experiences and travels play a large role in his paintings. Ryan’s approach to graffiti has also matured, he has become a world-renowned graffiti artist, and works to employ free art to the community through sanctioned public murals that can be seen everywhere from Melrose in Hollywood to his neighborhood of Cabbagetown in Toronto. "Graffiti Life" AT THE LYCEUM
International graffiti artist pens theatrical dance show about underground culture April 20, 2009—Culture Shock San Diego's (CSSD) "Graffiti Life," a theatrical dance show written by Graffiti Writer, Pose 2, will premiere May 28 to 31 at the Lyceum Theatre at Horton Plaza. On May 28 and 29, showtime will be at 7 p.m.; May 30 times will be at 2 and 7 p.m.; and on May 31 it will be at 5 p.m. The show will run alongside "Pose 2 is Mr. Maxx Moses," an exhibit of Pose 2's graffiti work on display in the Lyceum's Upstairs Lobby gallery until June 6. "Graffiti Life," CSSD's second evening-length production, exposes the underground culture of graffiti through hip-hop dance. "People in general don't know a lot about graffiti. They see it, but they don't see it being done, they don't know the inner workings of the writer, of the graffiti writer," says Pose 2, who began his own graffiti life in 1976 in the subways of New York City. "Graffiti is the most relevant art form right now because it's alive. You don't have to go to a museum to see it, it's in the street. We interact with it every day and there's so much controversy surrounding it—a lot of controversy, a lot of mystery, a lot of misunderstanding." Aside from asking larger questions about graffiti, such as whether it's art or trash, "Graffiti Life" reveals the different philosophies and conflicts among graffiti writers. The story follows Ill (played by Sherman Shoate), a dominating male character who symbolizes the angry, destructive aspect of graffiti; SheRock (played by Angela Molton), the female lead who exemplifies the beauty and uplift the art has to offer; and the Young Boys Crew (played by David Silvas, David Henry and Jeremy "Jermz" Mascardo), a new generation of up-and-coming graffiti writers who are influenced by both faces of the art form and struggle to find their place within the culture. Pose 2 was motivated to write the show after seeing the 2006 production of "Christopher, for the love ...," CSSD's first dance-theater work. "I had never seen a group of choreographed B-boys perform and I was really impressed." Collaborating with CSSD was a natural step, he says. "Working with Pose 2 on 'Graffiti Life' has been a real education," says Angie Bunch, CSSD's executive director. "I went into this excited about trying something new and have come out of it with an entirely new awareness of art in general and graffiti art in particular. Culture Shock's perspective on Pose 2's story is exciting, raw and beautiful. 'Graffiti Life' is a feast for the senses." Part of the proceeds from the show will be used to offer three scholarships for a seven- to 14-week session of the "Graffiti as an Art Form Class" at the Art Academy of San Diego in North Park taught by Pose 2. His work also can be found the New Children's Museum and in murals downtown. Winners also will receive a package of free dance classes at the renowned Culture Shock Dance Center. There are no requirements; all ages are encouraged to apply and graffiti writing experience isn't necessary. Those interested can sign up for a scholarship at one of the shows. Tickets for "Graffiti Life" cost $25 and $22 for seniors, the military and students. Seating is general admission. Tickets will be available at the Culture Shock Dance Center, the Lyceum box office and online at www.lyceumevents.org and www.sdartstix.com starting April 21. Pre-sale tickets, which cost $20, are now available at the Dance Center. A 17-year stalwart in the dance community, CSSD’s members have gone on to perform with Destiny’s Child and Missy Elliott. Special thanks go out to the Friends of the Weserburg. Opening: May 15, 2009, 7:00 p.m. Urban Art is everywhere. Unsolicited, it leaves its traces and signs in urban space. It conquers public space with stickers, posters, extensive murals, and stencil graffiti. It’s galleries are the world’s streets. What began as graffiti in the large cities on America’s east coast forty years ago has since experienced a decisive development. Even if the majority of actions continue to be produced anonymously and illegally, it is no longer exclusively a phenomenon associated with youth culture. Many of the protagonists have emancipated themselves from the pictorial language of graffiti writing and experimented with new forms of expression. With their subtle and humorous, occasionally offensive interventions in the urban landscape they attempt to force open familiar visual habits. As a rule, they are not concerned with damaging the urban infrastructure but with participating in a dialogue with the public. There is a variety of Urban Art. Temporary actions, unusual objects and sculptures, lettering, and characters are woven into the visual flow of the city as stumbling blocks. The possibility that many of the passers-by take no notice of these interventions is consciously taken into account. Thus they comprise a subversive counterweight to the constant presence of advertising, whose blinking images and seductive buying options dominate everyday life. It is not only in this respect that Urban Art is the expression of a critical examination of the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of the city, which in the age of globalization is rapidly and sustainably changing. Urban Art has recently experienced a downright hype. Numerous galleries and museums around the world have organized exhibitions, and works by the most well-known representatives of the genre have gained premium prices at auctions. What some accuse of being commercialization, the loss of authenticity, and the betrayal of original interests is viewed by many artists as a new chance. By transferring their themes and methods in the protected space of the museum, they develop very new and surprising approaches. But what kind of art is this that leaves its ancestral terrain? Do the works not require the city as a resonating space, as an immediate opponent? And is one of the essential features of Urban Art not its impermanence, its spontaneity? The Weserburg will be devoting itself to these questions in a large-scale exhibition centered around works from the Reinking Collection. The Hamburg-based collector Rik Reinking is a man of conviction. He has for many years now been accompanying numerous artists in the scene with great passion and intensity. His collection now includes representative works by some of the most influential protagonists. These include such well-known names as Banksy (UK), DAIM (Germany), Brad Downey (USA), Os Gemeos (Brazil), Shepard Fairey (USA), and Zevs (France). The exhibition will be supplemented by several artistic stances and new works, which have in part been produced specifically for Bremen. In addition, artistic interventions are planned in the Hanseatic city’s public space. Thus the exhibition will not only afford insight into a still young, unusual collection, it is at the same time a venue for the most recent developments of non-conformist art form that is in a constant state of flux. The exhibition will be supplemented by an attractive supporting program with workshops, walks through town, film evenings, and discussions and thus stimulate a lively as well as critical examination of the phenomenon of Urban Art. In addition, a comprehensive catalogue will be published including numerous illustrations and texts that are worth reading. The exhibition concept was developed by Ingo Clauß, curator at the Weserburg; Adrian Nabi, who as the initiator and curator of Berlin’s Backjumps exhibitions is one of the most well-known aficionados of the scene; and the collector Rik Reinking, who has been closely connected with the museum for many years. Responding to an invitation by the 32nd German Protestant Kirchentag (May 20–24, 2009), parallel to the exhibition, Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien is realizing the project Sign Seeing in Bremen. Besides highly interesting events related to Urban Art, the Copenhagen-based artist Victor Ash will be designing all four sides of an overhead hopper and thus set an example for a lively examination of street art. Opening Reception: May 15, 2009 7-10pm Ad Hoc Art is incredibly honored to present CRASH / DAZE, a stunning exhibition of never seen before works from each artist and featuring the first collaborative works between these legendary New York artists in over ten years. About CRASH: A contemporary of Keith Haring and a modern-day master of this present day art form, CRASH has shot his metaphorical arrows and dizzying flashes into subway cars, walls, and galleries around the globe. His work celebrates the movements of an ever-changing world and is a lavish gift to the eyes as well as a bold statement in time and space. A direct descendant of the Roman wall-scribes, CRASH has evolved his inherited gift back to its simplest form: "tagging," leaving his name, with a Lichtensteinian twist. As artists have long left personal marks and signatures to authenticate their works, CRASH goes further, leaving only his name as a reduction of unadulterated form; or "refined" art. Via his tenacity and talent, CRASH has successfully transitioned from the streets into the mainstream art world. His work, now exhibited globally, still possesses the vivid color and energy he produced initially on subways. True to his roots, CRASH maintains the lettering and image abstraction many writers feel are crucial to the art form. About DAZE: DAZE began painting New York City subway trains, the canvas of choice for the serious graffiti artist, in the late 1970’s. Since moving from subway trains to gallery walls, he has exhibited in Paris, Stockholm, Tokyo, Florence and many others. His work is in public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum Ludwig in Aachen, Germany, and the Brooklyn Museum, where he was also featured in the 2006 "Graffiti" exhibition. The Speerstra Family, The Coveri Family, and Eric Clapton’s are private collections containing DAZE’s creations. While experiencing mainstream success, DAZE still participates in traditional graffiti art venues and paints many largescale murals in urban areas. For the sheer “love of the culture” he can be found collaborating with writers from all over the world In DAZE’s paintings, references of the bygone era of subway painting combine with representational elements of urban characters and places such as Coney Island, elevated train stations, Times Square, and the lower east side. Many show a clear link to the Ashcan School of painting and the WPA artists of the 1940's such as Reginald Marsh, Ben Shaun, Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, and John Sloan.

JOSÉ PARLÁ: READING THROUGH SEEING, NEW WORKSOoi Botos Gallery is pleased to announce Reading Through Seeing, an exhibition by contemporary artist José Parlá, on view 14 May through 11 July 2009. This will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong and will showcase new paintings, works on paper, photographs and ceramic works. The exhibition will take place during Art HK 09 and will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with essays by scholars Alexandra Chang of New York University — Asia Pacific Center and critical theorist and art historian Michael Betancourt. José Parlá’s new works are inspired by his recent travels in France, Japan and the United Kingdom. Parlá’s unique and playful inscriptions and diary-like gestures with his trademark hand–writing recall his personal observations of how the idiosyncratic behavior of anonymous individuals on those distant streets distinctly impact each geographical environment. The complexity of José Parlá’s mixed media paintings is based on the layering of images and paraphernalia collected from his daily encounters at home and his adventures abroad, interpreted through his dynamic gestural process. Interleaved through each work is Parlá’s calligraphic script, which infuses each piece with vibrancy, energy and meaning. Memories, thoughts, ideas, quotes, phrases, conversations and observations scrawled in Parlá’s instantly recognizable, flowing script reflect his characteristic fusion of writing and painting, word and image. His brushwork depicts walls in the city, or in rural areas outside of urban centers, while his mélange of imagery and words hint at stories within stories, an evocation of the places that have deeply affected him. The story-telling nature of José Parlá’s work is mesmerizing. At first glance, his paintings are reminiscent of an abandoned street alley, but as one’s eyes linger, one realizes the density and complexity of overflowing imagery. Parlá’s innate gift of capturing both the chaos and the tranquility of the city has moved countless viewers. About José Parlá José Parlá is a New-York based artist whose paintings reflect the way in which cities function as palimpsests. Born in Miami, Parlá traveled in the Caribbean, South America, Asia and Europe in the 1990s before settling permanently in New York. His work has been collected and exhibited by Agnes B. Galerie Du Jour in Paris and Takashi Murakami’s Kai Kai Ki Ki gallery in Tokyo. Major recent exhibitions include, The New Grand Tour showing in Hong Kong and Beijing (2007-08), Adaptation / Translation at Elms Lesters Painting Rooms in London (2008), and Layered Days with Cristina Grajales’ Soho gallery in New York City (2008). About Ooi Botos Gallery Ooi Botos is Hong Kong’s leading avant-garde gallery specializing in photography, digital media, video and installation. The ArrivalFrom 7 February to 10 May 2009 the city centre museum and gallery will be holding a show entitled, ‘The Arrival’, Urban Art. The exhibition features work by a range of International artists, also known as Graffiti artists, Urban artists or Outsider artists, such as Banksy, Adam Neate, Candice Tripp, Swoon, Elbowtoe and others. Working with an eclectic mix of styles in a range of media, many of the artists explore social issues such as globalisation and consumerism while others focus on the individual, sex and society. There will be a series of events running throughout this show from graffiti art workshops to an open forum debate where members of the public can join the discussion as to whether this form of art is a valid art movement.
