Ad Hoc Art is incredibly honored to present CRASH / DAZE, a stunning exhibition of never seen before works from each artist and featuring the first collaborative works between these legendary New York artists in over ten years.
About CRASH: A contemporary of Keith Haring and a modern-day master of this present day art form, CRASH has shot his metaphorical arrows and dizzying flashes into subway cars, walls, and galleries around the globe. His work celebrates the movements of an ever-changing world and is a lavish gift to the eyes as well as a bold statement in time and space.
A direct descendant of the Roman wall-scribes, CRASH has evolved his inherited gift back to its simplest form: "tagging," leaving his name, with a Lichtensteinian twist. As artists have long left personal marks and signatures to authenticate their works, CRASH goes further, leaving only his name as a reduction of unadulterated form; or "refined" art. Via his tenacity and talent, CRASH has successfully transitioned from the streets into the mainstream art world. His work, now exhibited globally, still possesses the vivid color and energy he produced initially on subways. True to his roots, CRASH maintains the lettering and image abstraction many writers feel are crucial to the art form.
About DAZE: DAZE began painting New York City subway trains, the canvas of choice for the serious graffiti artist, in the late 1970’s. Since moving from subway trains to gallery walls, he has exhibited in Paris, Stockholm, Tokyo, Florence and many others. His work is in public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum Ludwig in Aachen, Germany, and the Brooklyn Museum, where he was also featured in the 2006 "Graffiti" exhibition. The Speerstra Family, The Coveri Family, and Eric Clapton’s are private collections containing DAZE’s creations. While experiencing mainstream success, DAZE still participates in traditional graffiti art venues and paints many largescale murals in urban areas. For the sheer “love of the culture” he can be found collaborating with writers from all over the world
In DAZE’s paintings, references of the bygone era of subway painting combine with representational elements of urban characters and places such as Coney Island, elevated train stations, Times Square, and the lower east side. Many show a clear link to the Ashcan School of painting and the WPA artists of the 1940's such as Reginald Marsh, Ben Shaun, Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, and John Sloan.

With its deliberately provocative theme of 'resurrection', the exhibition reflects this challenging period of socio-political and economic flux.
“Ron English continues to exploit the mismatch between effortless style and edgy content in his paintings. It’s an effective strategy, wrong-footing viewers and making them reconsider the way they might absorb imagery from advertising without critically engaging with it.” Ben Jones, art historian.

Ron English will be in the gallery between 12.00 noon and 2.00pm to sign copies of the limiited edition book which has been published by Elms Lesters to accompany the exhibition.

GUM/Graphic Urban Modernism
The tag says Misk1. The passport says Sandro Tchikovani. The signature style of Surreal Typography he's Kryloned onto walls, bridges and boxcars from Sapporo to Belgium to his hometown of San Francisco says there's a new breed of artist in our midst. Sandro's portfolio of commissions reads like a "Who's Who" of brands for the new century. What inspires Microsoft, Nike, Red Bull and host of other global corporations to beat a trail to Sandro's door? Originality. Vision. And a soul that never stops searching. In his latest work Sandro deconstructs the letterforms, textures and colors of his earlier styles to craft a wholly new, dynamically expressive archetypal aesthetic. Graphic Urban Modernism. Art that fuses the street with the surreal. Art that stops time.

To celebrate our 7th Year Anniversary, Crewest brings you the third installment of CANceptual. An art exhibition utilizing the spray can as the canvas. Artists are encouraged to find those old rusted cans and recycle them by turning them into fine art pieces for sale at the gallery. For two days, May 15th and 16th, a powerful visual protest will take place in Downtown LA that will include artists from around the nation whose motive and works will combat the all-too-common abuse of power by America's police forces.
The show expresses the voices of a generation of minority and marginalized communities being criminalized by this pathological social dynamic. This issue is not just an isolated problem only happening in a few large cities but is of nationwide epidemic levels. This event hopes to cast attention upon this injustice and advocate for reform.
This event is inspired by a recent art exhibition that took place in the San Francisco Bay Area that was in response to the murder of Oscar Grant by the Oakland police. The group of local artists displayed works with a common goal - to bring responsible public awareness to this volatile and heated issue. The LA event will include works by many of local political artists along with work from other talents from across the nation, incorporating music, live art, performance art, installations and other mediums.
Participating visual artists include:

The project is an outcome of co-operation between the Institute of Art called ‘Wyspa’ located in the old areas of Gdaƒsk Shipyard and a group of young artists, organizers of culture activities and art curators from Tri-city.
The major project includes the ‘Islandea’ exhibition, graffiti jam and music concerts. Whereas, the additional events are film screenings and laser tagging.

Graffiti is a living modern street art, which is not restricted only to the written form. ‘Islandea’ exhibition aims to present diverse artistic forms taken from graffiti, transformed and expressed by artists themselves, shown as special sorts of media like audio-video installations, sculptures, mural art and performance.

About Estria: I've been writing since '84, mostly in San Francisco. I'm one of the few OGs here still promoting the culture. I've worked hard to be versatile at both letters and characters. I got busted hard in '92 in San Francisco and it was one of the most high profile cases of the time, even covered on CNN. I co-founded a graffiti mural workshop in Oakland that has been in operation for 8 years, and I invented the stencil tip.

Jersey City, NJ. May 1, 2009- “The B-Boy is the physical Graffiti artist, he is the lyrical and kinetic scratch, he is the break beat manifest, the most modern of all dancers.”
Fifty8 Gallery presents B-Line B-Boy Drawings and Sculpture the anticipated solo exhibition of renown sculptor, painter, Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez. Inspired by his childhood era connection to the B-Boy culture this unique series of works are a study in capturing the dynamic movement of the ‘break’ dancer in what he calls ‘linear still frames’. Mare139 provokes us to consider through his simplification of shapes and gestures what gravity defying kinetics are involved in the dance form.
Fascinated as a youth with close association to well known B-Boy crews, he learned the art from the insiders perspective and well understood the text and physical nature of B-Boying by being present at countless ‘jams’ or ‘battles’. Correlating the dance to the abstracted letter forms of graffiti was shared among his circle of influence, several whom were also graffiti artists, among them Doze Green.
Internationally exhibited and collected his graffiti sculpture works are among the most important and innovative of the post NYC subway graffiti movement. His most recent showing is currently in the Grand Palis in Paris for the exhibition Tag au Graffiti.
Mare139 has also designed the 2005 and 2007 Red Bull Beat Battle Awards, The B-Boy SPY Award for the Rock Steady Crew as well as the Annual BET Award (Black Entertainment Television).
Gallery 58 is easily accessible from NYC by PATH train. Enter the PATH train at 33rd, 23rd, 14th, 9th or Christopher St. street in Manhattan and exit at Grove Street in Jersey City. From there it is a short walk up Newark Ave. to Coles St. where you make a right and find the gallery.

Martha Cooper’s 25th Anniversary Edition of Subway Art and Going Postal Book Signing
First Ever Chicago Handmade Sticker Exchange--All Stickers $5
and Making Deals Zine Premiere
Friday, May 1st 5-10 PM
Novem Life, 1114 N. Ashland in Chicago.
For more information visit novemlife.com
For the first time in her thirty year career, famed street photojournalist Martha Cooper will be coming to Chicago to release the highly anticipated 25th anniversary edition of the bestselling book Subway Art. The new edition features a large-scale deluxe format, heightening the visual impact of her classic graffitti images and adding new photographs and text. Going Postal, Cooper’s new book about the burgeoning postal sticker art scene in New York will also be available. Cooper will have photographs for sale at the event, and artist and Chicago native, Thor will be creating an art installation based on Subway Art.
Martha Cooper is a Manhattan-based documentary photographer whose vintage images of graffiti and hip hop culture are widely published. Subway Art, originally published in 1984, instantly became a staple in the collections of graffiti art and hip-hop fans everywhere and is commonly referred to as, “the graffiti bible.” The project was an in-depth look at the environment captured during the 1970s and 80s by photographers Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant.
To coincide with Cooper’s release of her other new book, Going Postal, Upset, a collective of artists from Chicago and New York, presents a handmade sticker art sale featuring work from many of the artists in Cooper’s postal sticker art book. Over 60 artists from New York and Chicago are involved in the sale. All stickers sell for only $5 and artists are encouraged to exchange stickers with other artists. Featured artists include Blanco, C-Damage, Faust, Overconsume, Stomach, and more.
The Making Deals Chicago zine premiere takes place at the Novem store, only a few doors down from the Martha Cooper event, at 1104 N. Ashland. The New York City based zine compiles images that creator Frank Serpico finds personally interesting including graffiti, drug dealing, 70s cinema and sports, and urban mayhem with a focus on New York and Chicago—the artist’s hometown. Making Deals issues 1 through 3 will be available, each printed in a limited edition of 100. Issue One features an interview with Chicago graffiti legend Sivel. For the premiere, Serpico, who is also co-founder of Upset, will have illustrations and paintings available for sale.
The Upset is a community of friends, photographers, and artists who have pooled their talents into an artist’s collective with a focus on American street culture. The Upset currently curates art events and publishes an independent magazine. For more information visit upsetmag.blogspot.com.
Novemlife.com originally launched in 2006; created by the Chicago art collective Novem Studios as a platform to collaborate with other artists and performers. The site contains featured artist interviews, photos, and footage, while maintaining a running blog updated by the Novem team itself. The Novem Life space is a storefront gallery on Ashland Ave, opening especially for this event. Located steps away from their permanent retail space, Novem plans to have doors of both spaces open for the event.

We're having a graffiti film festival at the non-profit Maysles Cinema in Harlem. For more info and updates go to www.mayslesfilms.com
The full schedule is posted at http://www.mayslesinstitute.org/cinema/calendar.html
Throughout the month of May, The Maysles Cinema presents "Kings of the City," a selection of rare and classic documentaries that examine the emergence of graffiti as an art form and culture in New York City, and its influence on European culture and back again. The series will include a month long Graffiti Art gallery (all sales go to the Graffiti Art education non-profit, "The Walls Belong to Us.")
In addition to the sixteen films that will be screened throughout "Kings of the City," many NYC graffiti pioneers, such as KET ONE, Carlos "Mare 139" Rodriguez, and the legendary Tats Cru will be on hand to present screenings and contextualize the rise of graffiti culture from a subversive act to an international movement. On Friday, May 1st, Manfred Kircheimer, director of the cult classic Stations of the Elevated (1980),will be on hand to discuss his impressionistic study in motion of the graffiti tattooing of New York City subway trains in his legendary film that is set to the music of the jazz great, Charlie Mingus.
- The Maysles Cinema: The Best Spot for Film Geeks "For a $7 suggested donation per screening, you can catch rarely seen documentaries, often followed by discussions and/or appearances by the filmmakers. What it lacks in stadium seating and surround sound, it makes up in sheer character and inventive programming." - New York Magazine

Swiss psychiatrist, Carl Gustav Jung found that the phenomenon of a fragmented identity could result in a particular complex, rooted in a strong archetypal model. A superhero complex will cause an individual to take on a more benevolent behavior; and by doing as such one can 'unlock' the true meanings of self. The "Superhero Complex" is a recent set of paintings I have made, where my motivation was the inner-drive for self-discovery in Erik DeBat "Risk". Creating a personal dialogue with the collective unconsciousness, and breaking it's rules. My pseudonym "Risk" and I are having fun with the balance and harmony of black and white with the assault of color from the spray cans. I've been residing in and exploring the inner landscape of the mind, enjoying the action and repetition of the spray painting flowing with a clean execution of bold images and messages. Drawing from a counterculture life as a graffiti artist and the daily onslaught of pop culture. I love to vacation in the canvases of my Chicago design studio.
Erik DeBat grew up in Chicago during the 80s, at age of 12 he started painting the name "RISK" on rooftops along the CTA elevated and subway lines through the neighborhoods of Logan Square, Bucktown, and Wicker Park. In 1986, DeBat was among the 1st wave of Chicago graffiti artists to exhibit their artwork in galleries and began doing commissions for interior designers and private collectors.
Today, DeBat considers his design and paintings contemporary urban canvases where he likes to comment on society and things he loves. His work is borne from the energy of life around him. The artwork and installations is driven by popular culture, punk rock, and fashion. His use of symmetries and colors intuitively transcend throughout his work with the use of photography, typography, drawing and printing techniques.
DeBat has painted with former pop artist Keith Haring and attended The School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he created and manufactured two international streetware lines, MadFam Ltd. and SuperBest Inc., which he and partners exported to distributors in Japan and old exclusively in N.Y.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, and Milwaukee throughout the mid 1990's.
DeBat has worked with Chicago advertising agencies and design firms on projects with clients such as 7/11, Nike Town, 3Com, Motorola, Kraft, Heller Financial, and Mall of America. He has exhibited and sold his art and design for the past 23 years and continues to live and work in Chicago.

Mid-City Arts Presents The First Solo Show From Chaka, Los Angeles’ Most Infamous Graffiti Artist
Los Angeles – March 2009 - Mid-City Arts is pleased to present the first solo show ever from the infamous LA graffiti artist, Chaka. Resurrection opens April 25th and will feature highly anticipated new work from the mysterious Chaka.
Daniel Ramos, AKA Chaka, was 18 when he was arrested and charged in
1991 with 48 counts of vandalism, trespassing and causing $500,000 in
property damage. Chaka’s signature tag had appeared in a
staggering 10,000 locations from Orange County to San Francisco. At the
height of his notoriety Chaka was demonized by mainstream media and
culture as being little more than a prolific vandal. At the same time he
was celebrated by street artists who admired the ability of a teenager
from the projects to literally make his mark on the vast, glitzy LA
cityscape in such a ubiquitous manner.
He is credited with breaking away
from the New York “wildstyle” popular at the time and
introducing clearer, more blockish lettering into tagging. Chaka was one
of the first to create a reputation as a recognizable individual tagger,
and spawned many imitators. However Chaka was not just a lone operative.
He was part of the LOD crew and as such, his work in reclaiming hard to
reach places of the cityscape (freeway overpasses, walls, trains etc.) on
behalf of his crew is recognized by fellow taggers as a selfless
achievement for LA’s graffiti scene as a whole.
After spending a year tracking down the once unavoidable Chaka,
Mid-City Arts presents his first solo show. For Chaka’s fans as
well as street art collectors, this will be a rare opportunity to
revisit the nostalgia of the early 90’s, and own a piece of
LA’s cultural history. Chaka himself will be in attendance and
there will be a limited number of signed posters in addition to his
works available for sale.
The opening reception will take place

25th, 7:00-9:00pm

purpose of showcasing local, national, and international artwork by up

graffiti / street / urban art.
Mid-City Arts offers a show space that

The selection of Gibson Guitars being customised are: Les Paul, Melody Maker, Flying V and SG.
The ABC Trust is pleased to present A Força da Rua (Force of the Street), an exclusive contemporary street art project bringing together 12 of the finest artists from Brazil and the UK, including D*Face, Inkie, Titi Freak, Speto and Calma. Each artist will create a unique piece of art that will help raise funds and awareness for Brazil’s most vulnerable children.
Gibson Guitar - a long time supporter of the ABC Trust charity - have donated 12 of their most iconic guitars including Les Paul, Melody Maker, Flying V and SG - to be customised. These will then be exhibited at a central London location and sold at a high profile VIP charity art auction at the Cuckoo Club on 29 April.

Works from the Collection of Andipa Gallery
Andipa Gallery is proud to present a selling exhibition of rare works by the UK’s leading urban artist, Banksy, including the largest canvas ever to come on the market. All of the works on display are from the gallery’s collection, built up over the last three years.
Andipa was the first gallery to put on a major exhibition of Banksy’s work in the secondary market, showcasing one of the largest collections of the artist’s work. Over 25,000 people visited the gallery during the exhibition in 2008 to view one of the most extensive private surveys of the artist’s work brought together in recent years; many visitors queuing up to an hour for entry.
This exhibition will show only original canvases, such as Are You Using That Chair (2005) which will take centre stage. Measuring over four meters in length, this is the largest canvas by Banksy to have come onto the market. The work is based on Edward Hopper’s well-known painting Nighthawks (1942). Another work to be included is an original oil on canvas depicting a traditional portrait of an English Lord struck by a custard pie. Also to be included is a delightful mini canvas portraying a monkey wearing a placard with the inscription ‘Keep it Real’ – a befitting statement in today’s environment.
Acoris Andipa, Director, Andipa Gallery, “Banksy continues to defy the establishment with poignant commentary through his street work. He continues to evolve and adapt as an artist, as we saw with his response to the New Orleans anniversary and his New York Village Pet Store creations last year. He’s always one step ahead of the game, reasserting freedom of speech through both his street works and his studio output.”
Andipa Gallery does not represent Banksy and all works on display are from the gallery’s collection. The exhibition has not been organised by the artist.

Long Beach CA: April 18 - May 14, 2009
Long Beach, CA, April 3rd, 2009 - DDR Projects is proud to welcome Patrick EVOKE to the gallery exhibiting his disturbing, yet poignant work. Show opens Saturday, April 18, 2009 at 7:00 PM.
For his first exhibition at DDR Projects, Artist Patrick Evoke has created a series of remarkable portraits that are neither paintings, drawings, prints or photographs, they are an entirely new beast. These beautiful and haunting works are the actual physical records of cosmetics peeled from the faces of heavily "made up" transvestites, drag queens and working women of South East Asia."Each day these individuals look into the mirror and paint a self portrait. They put on a mask and get into character. It from this middle space that these works emerge. In these works, the surreal theatrics of this cosmetic transformation merge with the wrinkles hairs and imperfections of real life. They are as intimate a portrait as one will ever capture.
Canadian artist Patrick Thompson’s installations of painting, wall drawings, printmaking and sculpture, are investigations of the idea of information; explored through mass media, architecture, history and the dynamics of culture, defined equally by their range and their lyrical visual language Highly esteemed for pushing the boundaries of street art, he has painted outdoors under the pseudonym Evoke throughout North and Central America, Europe, and Asia. Thompson is often placed into the "Canadian School" of street artists including Other, Labrona, and Thesis Sahib -- a group known for their inspired improvisations and openness towards freeform mark making.
Thompson’s own creative process develops through a self-coined process he refers to as “mistakism”, whereby the artist allows a memory, feeling, sentence, or some other bite of information to spark the beginning of a particular work. Imagery follows, inspired by the ‘in-between’ places found throughout the Canadian landscape -- converging into dreamlike scenes. This union creates a pictorial space where imaginary characters, forms and marks can interact in a place that is whimsical as well as charged. In 2007, Thompson created "Ishtar Gate" in collaboration with artists Derek Mehaffey and Juan Carlos Noria for; BAC! 07 International Festival of Contemporary Art in Barcelona- Edition VIII. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions worldwide including; The Royal Ontario Museum; Institute for Contemporary Culture in Toronto, Luminato, the Singapore Contemporary Arts Museum, Desert Generation at Artist House Gallery in Jerusalem, Lombardi Gallery in Austin Texas and INOPERABLE Gallery in Vienna Austria.
Wall painting installation work includes Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, Quest University in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada, SAW Gallery in Ottawa, Canada and Hualien, Taiwan. Patrick is the co-founder of the Embassy of Imagination- A mobile art school that uses visual art as a tool for empowerment, connecting remote First Nations communities with new ideas in visual art.

Catalogue available featuring texts by Sacha Jenkins, Dave Greenberg and Fred Brathwaite
Il Trifoglio Nero is delighted to present Truth & Consequences, Lee Quiñones’ first solo show in Italy since 1980. As Sacha Jenkins notes in the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition, ‘Lee has always used his art to address the heavier thoughts and fears of humankind — his subway works, for instance, could ponder anything from nuclear holocausts to the middle ground the Earth might provide between say heaven and hell. The body and blood of Truth & Consequences is a proud extension of this sentiment.’
Lee Quiñones has been at the forefront of American graffiti art and is universally regarded as a leading figure in the development and transition of Post-Graffiti within the contemporary art world. Today, while displayed for an art-world audience, his work has landed in both public and private collections around the globe.
Along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lee Quiñones was one of the key innovators during the early days of New York’s street-art movement. In keeping with his tradition of innovation, Quiñones was also one of the first street artists to transition away from creating murals on trains and begin creating canvas-based paintings. The 1979 exhibition of his canvases at Claudio Bruni’s Galleria Medusa in Rome introduced street art to the rest of the world.
Much of this influence was due to Fred Brathwaite who sought out Lee in 1979. Lee credits Brathwaite - known as Fab Five Freddy- for single-handedly fusing uptown hip-hop flavor with the gritty downtown punk aesthetic. Lee starred in director Charlie Ahearn’s Wild Style, a film loosely written about Lee’s life, endearing him to a generation of hip-hop fans that premiered in 1983. His work also appeared in Tony Silvers and Henry Chalfant’s 1983 documentary film Style Wars. The art and music of the time further meshed as Lee, Fab Five Freddy and Jean Michel Basquiat designed backdrops for Blondie’s infamous “Rapture” video. Lee’s body of work extends across a massive scope – from canvas to large murals and installation to elaborate commissions. His collaborations with companies include a 25th anniversary edition of the Adidas shoe as part of a series including the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Missy Elliott, of which his edition sold out worldwide in half a day. He has also worked with Ford Motor Company, Nike, IFC TV, Viacom, Absolute Vodka, and Automobile Magazine among others. Lee has lectured at universities and cultural institutions including New York University, Columbia University, the University of New Mexico, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and the Institute of North American Studies in Barcelona, Spain. Lee has twice been recognized at the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors awards show and he was a recipient of the Jam Master Jay Award for the Arts in 2007. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he raised $65,000 for the Boys and Girl’s Clubs of America by riding a bicycle from New York to Miami. For his humanitarian efforts, October 27th is officially Lee Quinones Day in New York, an honored bestowed by both Manhattan and Brooklyn borough presidents.
Quinones’ paintings are included in numerous public and private collections around the world including the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Groningen and Boijmans Van Beuningen Museums in the Netherlands. He has exhibited at PS1 in New York, at Documenta #7 in Kassel, at the Museum of National Monuments in Paris and at the Staatliche Museum in Germany as well as with numerous galleries including Barbara Gladstone, Sidney Janis, Rudolph Zwirner, Galerie du Jour / Agnès B and the Lisson Gallery.

All Day Graff/Skill Sharing/Knowledge Passing/Know Your Rights Day
The Southern California Library, a people’s library, where history is a struggle and revolution is irresistible, is located in the heart of South Central, Los Angeles. We are dedicated to documenting, collecting, and preserving the histories of communities in struggle for justice.
Many of our programs are breathing new life and there is a desire to change the perception that many have of the neighborhood we call home.
The Southern California Library invites you to join us on Tuesday, April 7th @1pm, for our 2nd "South Central Writes: I Have the Right to..."Day. Celebrate in community the right to share your voice through art. Travel through time, check out the Drawing Lines Exhibit, build your skills at 5 different graffiti stations, and express yourself on the South Central Writes Mural. Music, Prizes, and Free Food.
I extend this invitation to continue the work that begun on December 10th. The library held an event in solidarity with the International Human Rights Day in which we made use of the outside walls to communicate (through graffiti) the different rights we believe we are entitled to have as members of a community. Our walls were routinely getting tagged up before this event took place- this all changed after December 10th.
The families and youth who we build relationships with are members of the same communities that are being severely impacted by the slashing of California’s education budget as fiscal decisions continue to prioritize the funding of structures that hail proudly the title of the #1 Prison State.
The Los Angeles Police Department statement on What Graffiti Means to a Community - isolates members of our community that identify with and choose this art form to express themselves. With amazing skills to share - we want to show the rest of Los Angeles, that if given the opportunity and space to do so, intergenerational and international communities can come together to transform and understand our right to express ourselves and live.
A couple of ways that you can show your support for this project:
· Volunteer: Staff stations, volunteer the day of, help us prepare in advance
· Donate: All currencies welcome! Time, money, energy, resources- if you are a local business, consider a tax deductible donation(materials/food); if you are an artist, donate your old tips/supplies/skills; if you are a local organization, donate your existing materials(pamphlets/brochures) to help build the Resource Table of Rights
· Outreach: Calling all walks of life/Street Teams to help spread the word! If you are a student, stop by the library and pick up some flyers/posters for your school. If you are locally based, join us for one of our 3 community walks
· Promote Coverage: Extra, Extra! All local newspapers, bloggers, zines, and media channels it is your responsibility to help us change perceptions. Please let us know how we can facilitate the coverage of this event

A painting collection of 150 international artists' work. "... a French exhibition, above, is enhancing the international recognition of graffiti artists. Among those honored in the show, called “Tag,” at the Grand Palais in Paris, are four New York pioneers who have been active since the 1970s: Toxic, Quik, Seen and Rammellzee .... The exhibition, which runs through April 26, was commissioned and organized by Alain-Dominique Gallizia, a French architect who became interested in graffiti as an art form when he encountered examples of it at his work sites. Some 150 graffiti artists prepared works for display in the show; most are from the United States or France, but countries including Australia, Brazil, Chile and Japan are also represented." -AFP

Il Trifoglio Nero is pleased to present a solo show by the Brooklyn based artist, Romon Kimin Yang, aka Rostarr.
For ‘Oculus Velocitas’ he will be presenting both new paintings and some very special original sculptures, made with Maestro Pino Signoretto at his studio in Murano, Venice.
The new paintings, specifically the Vitruvian Brush Series mark a new departure for the artist and signal a new ‘rebirth in colour’ – a reaction to recent events in the USA and the successful election of the new President.
Rostarr, like Da Vinci, retains a keen interest in both art and science, his own ‘Graphysics’ mixes graphic art and physics and the analogy of the human body as a microcosm of the universe is another point of intersection.

*Zonenkinder Collective
Influenced by mixed memories resulting from our various journeys to Europe, Asia and Africa, from our love for the flavour of graffiti, for arcimboldo, Hieronymus Bosch and our positive thinking we try to merge contemporary "streetart", popsurrealism and character design with ethnical elements thereby creating our own style. One main part of our work is to create art in the streets and nature and to work with the environment which surrounds us and inspires us to be creative. In fact sometimes we do not really know what kind of art we create.often we just discover places which scream for color and revival or we suddenly see diffuse parts, faces, animals in a fresh painted wall or a tree and let it flow.

*Danny Gretscher
Danny Gretscher is a multifaced man. His illustrations of fictional
characters in the swirl of time - sometimes confronted with or accompanied
by textual fragments - narrate much more than is displayed.
His subtle chosen materials and formats create resolute spaces and
impressive atmospheres in which the viewer is incorporated almost
unresistingly. Danny's immediate questions adressing life and his frank perception turn his pictures and installations - wheresoever you might meet them - into an unconstrained place for relocating oneself into oddly wonderful daily routines.

Santa Monica (Los Angeles) CA: March 26, 2009
March 26th, 2009 from 7pm to 10pm
artLAB Salon
1410 Montana Avenue
Santa Monica, CA 90403
Committed to artistic exploration, artLAB Salon will be debuting the first in a series of art collaborations on March 26th, with Downtown L.A.’s premier art venue, Crewest Gallery. This collaboration of "Eastside meets Westside" promotes the most talented, known and unknown, underground fine artists and top hair stylists on the LA scene. The "art of hair" combines with Crewest’s innovative art that speaks to the heart and soul to elevate the atmosphere of artLAB from a great hair salon to a cutting edge art gallery.
This exhibit showcases seven of the most active members of the internationally lauded Cause of Insanity (COI) graffiti crew who have helped establish Crewest as a prominent force in art from street to canvas and now to the walls of artLAB:
· Vyal with his dark and surreal character styles is also the original creator of the "Graffiti Saved My Life" apparel brand.
· Marka27, a prolific artist who is never confined to one medium and most recently known for his highly acclaimed "Mini-gods", a series of vinyl toy designs that also function as working speakers for your ipod or computer.
· Werc, although well known for his graffiti art and murals, his fine art inspirations come from logos, symbolism, architecture, urbanization, and the humor and nostalgia in specific immigrant cultures.
· Sherm, the only female graffiti artist allowed to represent the COI Crew with her unique style, she’s also known and respected for her graphics and web design capabilities.
· Man One, the founder and director of Crewest Gallery, as well as established artist whose murals and designs have been commissioned by ESPN, Coca-Cola, Adidas, and more as well as being featured on national commercial ads for Microsoft, Ford and on national TV programs for MTV, ABC, and PBS among others.
· Sacred194, is the innovating member and founder of COI Crew. He is a living legend in the Los Angeles graffiti scene known for his innovative use of style and techniques which are now common place, such as the use of house paints to fill in his large mural sized graffiti street pieces.
· Huit, meaning "eight" in his native French, is one of the newest members of the crew and is a master at painting with cans as well as pixels.

Featuring author Joseph Rivera, former Commanding Officer Lieutenant Steven Mona, Original Vandal Squad Lieutenant Ken Chiulli, graffiti legend COPE2, graffiti activist Ket, and street artist ELLIS G. Moderated by cultural consigliere Sacha Jenkins SHR
Thursday, March 19, from 7–9pm
The powerHouse Arena, 37 Main Street, Brooklyn
RSVP@powerHouseArena.com
The recent release Vandal Squad: Inside the New York City Transit Police Department, 1984–2004 has caused consternation throughout the global graffiti community with charges that author Joseph Rivera is profiting off the very criminals he spent his career incarcerating.
In response, the powerHouse Arena will host a conversation between former members of the Vandal Squad and the graffiti writers, the first such event of its kind. With the intent of providing an open forum for public discussion to discuss the issues regarding the methods that the Vandal Squad employs and their impact on the lives of the writers themselves. Panelists include Vandal Squad author Joseph Rivera, former Commanding Officer Lieutenant Steven Mona, original Vandal Squad Lieutenant Ken Chiulli, graffiti legend COPE2, graffiti activist Ket, and street artist ELLIS G. The event will be moderated by cultural consigliere Sacha Jenkins SHR.
Founded in 1980, the Vandal Squad’s mission was to protect the subway system from hardcore criminal acts of destruction like kicking out windows and throwing seats out of train cars. It was only with the Clean Car Program of 1984 that graffiti became the primary focus of this specialized Unit. On a mission to catch those who gained fame under tag names, the Vandal Squad had to identify and locate these individuals cloaked in anonymity (and often so transient they were referred as “ghosts”) using every means available, including the NYPD computer database, Search Warrants, subpoenas, and even vandals themselves. These strategies, and their impact on the lives of the vandals, as well as concerns about the publication of the book, will be the focus of the conversation on Thursday, March 19, from 7–9pm at the powerHouse Arena, 37 Main Street, Brooklyn.

Superplan recently woke from hibernation and found everyone talking about the crisis. We wanted to know from 30 internation artists about that and in unison we demand: "Nix Krise". Nix Krise of course translates into something like "no crisis at all" or "cirsis- duh".
Imbued with optimism we'll present one piece of art from each artist. Contrary to 1Size/1Prize size and price are the artists' decision. With this in mind we declare: the hell with the crisis and with our rose-colored glasses we're set for 2009. Samples and information about the artists can be found at www.superplan.net.

The 01 Gallery presents "Vintage Futurism" an exhibition by graffiti artist Kofie One. Gallery Director Christina Ochoa curates collage works, watercolors and prints that showcase Kofie One's recent and continuous expansion of architectural styling and graffiti art. The exhibition shows from February 28th through March 29th, 2009.
From his early 90's exploits in West Los Angeles graffiti, Kofie One has determined a self-made artistic education upon graffiti art that now brings an iconic structure and fluid manner to all that Kofie One sees, hears, and feels about his life and love in and for Los Angeles. His artistic movement from the walls of L.A. streets to the precision of drafting on paper, results in a fine art esthetic that embodies, wrestles, and engages, all that is of formal art and "traditional" graffiti art. Often described as abstract freeways, the lines and letterforms of his art, tense with obsessive perfection. Kofie One's art connects the dots from street art to high art like a fundamental geometry that only a certain few graffiti artists have accomplished, yet maintains a tribute to the energy and creative origins of graffiti art.
In "Vintage Futurism" the exhibition further looks into Kofie One's mechanically detailed line-work, organically complex structures and heavy earth-tone palette that coalesce into a multi-layered, architectonic inspired world. A futuristic realm of lines and shapes not subject to gravity but firmly rooted in a formal manner. Executed by a sure hand, a feeling of motion unleashed underlies all of Kofie One's current works. In his mixed media works, circular forms stretch, drape and harmoniously combine with images from outdated and discarded publications and found vintage paper creating a provocative glimpse into a world both intricately complex and balanced in perfect harmony.
As a self-proclaimed detail freak, Kofie One's straightforward approach to painting continues to broaden his spectrum of creative endeavors and applications. He can be found today in his Echo Park, California studio producing commission works, collage and assemblages, watercolors, mural installations and the occasional live art event. The 01 Gallery invites the public to view a measure of his prolific work and become a part of his world.

IZ Began his writing career in the early 1970s and went on to become one of the most prolific graffiti writers of all time. He holds the title of the all time "All City King" of New York City Subways and only ONE holds that prestigious honor.
IZ played a major role in the development of writing and provided inspiration for every generation of writer that exists today. Hailing from Queens IZ took over the city subway system, line by line. During his career there was a time when he did 100+ throwups every night, for an entire year! The dedication and love for writing is apparent in all of his works, from the burners on the trains, the sketches on paper and the canvasses that capture the essence of writing. IZ will also often drop a little side note next to his work, little message that takes a minute to sink in and when it does you always get a grin.
He is also known for his epic role played in the film Style Wars. His witty remarks remain some of the most quoted words and phrases in the writing lexicon. When just the words you have said 25+ years ago are recognized and used in current conversations, you have successfully made your mark in history. In the movie IZ was asked something to the effect of when will you stop, and he said "I will come back every now and then to let people know I am still around". The true beauty is the fact that he never left and he continues to bless the people with gems that capture the essence of what graffiti writing is.
And whenever you hear the phrase "THIS IZ IT" "THIS IZ IT" recognize.

A group exhibition curated by Melissa McCaig Welles and Cope2
Opening Reception: Saturday, February 7th, 7-10pm
McCaig Welles Gallery is pleased to announce All that Glitters is Gold, a group exhibition presented by Melissa McCaig Welles and guest curator Cope2.
The exhibition invites never-before-exhibited artists along with represented artists with upcoming solo shows at the gallery to interpret the expansive theme of the show in a restrained 18x24 art piece.
Gallery owner Melissa McCaig Welles, intrigued by the somber economic and political climate, was interested in the potential for varying responses and overlapping interpretations to the All that Glitters is Gold title. "The title, for me personally, directly corresponds with the current economic climate and the disaster on Wall Street. The fact that we all believed the hype and gave our money away to untrustworthy people, bought more homes than we could afford and basically believed in all that glittered " states McCaig Welles. The show title invites artists to focus on what blinds human nature and perhaps, and hopefully, what redeems it.
Exhibiting Artists: Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez, CRIME 79, Can2, Chris Smith aka Subtexture, Cope2, Damion Silver, EWOK5MH, Greg Haberny, Indie184, Jen Props, Lance Turnbow, LogikOne, Lucas Irwin aka FILTH, Molly Crabapple, Mona Superhero, Queen Andrea, R Nicholas Kuszyk, Robert H. Specifically, we are looking for artists who:
- have organized large 2D or 3D works, preferably 3-D
- worked with groups to install the work (in our case, that may be students who can help with the installation)
- created art that interacts or helps others participate
- hopefully, can reflect ethnicity of our student populations: Latino, Vietnamese, Filipino, Anglo are the largest groups.
Our theme will revolve around the idea of art as a development tool for cultures, moving progress in all realms. Perhaps "Art as Catalyst for Change" etc.
Theme will be decided and given to the artist beginning March 1, 2009. Installation progress will begin after March.
Grand Opening Dates: Sept. 21-25, 2009
Location: Evergreen Valley College, San Jose, CA. Google us and zoom in to see the satellite view. The parking lot off "Valle del Lago" is where the new Center for the Arts is being constructed. We want the artist to determine where they would like to create their piece. It can be right near the Performance Center or somewhere else on campus.

Milan Italy: February 21 - 22, 2009

"Going Postal" by Martha Cooper: Book Release and Sticker Show/Exchange and postal-themed exhibition.
Postal stickers have long been a preferred substrate used by street artists to get up. Of course, because stickers from the US Postal Service, UPS, DHL and FedEx are so readily available, most of these stickers get lost in the fray, especially if you don't know what you're looking for.
That's where graffiti photography legend Martha Cooper comes in. Shooting the origins of hip-hop and graffiti cultures since the late 1970s in New York City, and later all over the world, Cooper's well-trained eyes know how to recognize deft sticker art. Here then is a collection of more than 200 photographs of some of Cooper's favorite handmade postal stickers from around the world, done by some of the scene's better-known artists and the anonymous.
Cooper has compiled a collection of photographs shot in numerous cities, including New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Tokyo, Berlin and Amsterdam, featuring postal-sticker art created by FAUST, Chris Stain, c.damage, GET2, COSBE and many more.
Going Postal documents how an old-school method has burgeoned into another rich facet of the world's graffiti cultures.

A solo exhibition of new work by Chris Stain
Address: Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art
1257 N. La Brea Avenue
West Hollywood CA 90038
Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present "Up on the
roof countin' pigeons", the first West Coast solo exhibition of work by
Baltimore artist Chris Stain. Artwork featured in the exhibition will
include stencil, spraypaint and mixed media on metal and found objects.
A preview reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday,
February 5th, 2009 from 7.00pm - 10.00pm. The exhibition will be open
for viewing through Thursday, February 26th 2009 from 1.00pm - 7.00pm.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Chris first developed an interest in art through graffiti at the age of eleven. In the years to come he learned printmaking in high school. This later led to stencil cutting when money wasn't readily available for printmaking equipment.
His subject matter is drawn from his working class upbringing on Baltimore's east side. The people he portrays in his work carry with them the struggle for a better life that all of us can relate to, especially in the current times.
Chris' self-taught style has gained him recognition worldwide. Since 2000 he has shown in numerous galleries in New York, California, Paris, London, Germany, and Amsterdam, amongst others. His work has also been published in several books about stencil graffiti and street art.

a collection of drawings and illustrations from a diverse group of international artists.
January 16th through February 15th 2009
Opening Reception: Friday, January 16th, 7-10pm
Ad Hoc Art is proud to present "Delineations": a collection of drawings and illustrations from a diverse group of international artists. Drawing has been and will always be a fundamental part of the art-making process. Starting as far back as the 1400's, artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Michelangelo, and Raphael used drawing as not only a starting point but as a way to communicate things which could not be accomplished in any other medium. Fast forward to the 1900's as artists such as Max Beckmann, Jean Dubuffet, Arshile Gorky, M. C. Escher, André Masson, and Pablo Picasso not only continued this serious examination of drawing as fine art, but took it to incredible new places through their creativity and talent. In more recent times artists such as Marcel Dzama, R. Crumb, Dan Clowes, Joe Sacco, Yoshitomo Nara, and Julie Doucet (among many, many others) again redefined how we look at drawing as not only a means to an end but an important and impressive end in itself. Continuing with this amazing tradition, we present to you a new generation of drawers and illustrators who hope to not only add to this amazing lineage of artists but to also find ways to reinvent and reinterpret how drawing can be used to communicate and enlighten.

Anonymous Gallery is proud to combine three generations of prolific artists whose work has been influenced by, or has directly influenced popular culture, design, and the urban environment. The Piece Process will unite relevant artists with their contemporary counterparts through artwork that serves as a reference or an impetus to something larger or more complete. Anonymous Gallery will exhibit unique pieces of art in the form of sketchbook drawings and original works on paper or found objects from over 30 established and emerging artists exhibiting in New York. The exhibition intends to create discourse in regard to artists who have not only influenced one another, but society through their use of iconography, collage, pen, paint, and print.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Anonymous Gallery, will also be hosting weekly workshops for children. Artists Todd James, Leon Reid, Michael De Feo, Maya Hayuk, Ellis Gallagher, among others, will teach the workshops. The current incarnation of the peripatetic Martinez Gallery is an apartment in Washington Heights that is more artwork than art gallery. Amsterdam-based designers Kaptein Roodnat have altered the apartment’s basic structure, and redefined its integrity and boundaries, slicing into walls, opening rooms into one another and incorporating outdoor spaces. In staging such a dramatic intervention in a rented apartment, the designers have transgressed against private property to create a space for public speech. Just as graffiti seeks to bring art into working-class urban neighborhoods, this new project brings street art indoors, showcasing affordable art in the context of affordable housing.
The space’s spirit of transgression, intervention and re-construction has been carried forward in the contributions of a dozen graffiti artists, with several taking on an iconic masterwork of art history. Kez5 domesticates Rodin while remodeling all doorways, and contributing to the sculptural reliefs of the baseboards of the apartment, always inspired by the French sculptor’s seminal Gates of Hell. NOXER maps the European continent via the modernist fascination with African art, while vampirizing Picasso, Modigliani, and “supervillains” in his guise as “Blackman.” CASE 2 riffs on Pollock, replacing drips with cartoon splashes and patterns on the floor. And, with punk sensibility, BRAIl chops up Aztec art, carving bas relief figures that dance apart from their static surfaces to tunes composed by Wifredo Lam. Even RATE takes on the role of connoisseur, curating a selection of drawings that are displayed in heavy museum frames left leaning against the wall: the drawings are by graffiti writers and kings including TyKE, BRAIl, MÖSCO, EARSNOT, COCO 144, VFR, SKUF, FlINT 707, gIZ, MICO and TRACy 168.
All surfaces and masterworks are either assaulted or re-invigorated by the artists. Nothing is left untouched. And, as result, both in the place and in the artists works, we are gradually exposed to conflicting notions of space and time that reflect the ongoing preoccupations with history and novelty, memory and experimentation, repetition and difference.
This apartment-cum-museum also includes a study center of books by
artists and critics.
Guided tours are available.

The Brick Lane Gallery is proud to present "Via Brick Lane E1", an exhibition showcasing works by a selection of Italian Street Artists, reunited for the first time in a London gallery. The exhibition will showcase nine of the most established Italian artists, some of which are represented in major collections worldwide and have a regular presence in international exhibitions and biennales.
Inspired by various art-historical movements as well as cultural references, these artists bridge the gap with the previous generation of Street Artists by developing new and innovative techniques of production and creation.
Continuing an affinity with the traditions of graffiti and stencils, the works are also intricately linked to the urban environment which the artists use to present subtle critical comments of today‚s society. Their aim is to create a guerilla-based freedom of expression which can compete with the market forces and their commercial visual impressions. Using the city‚s landscape, content and design as a source of inspiration to create a new global language, they attempt to make their works as visible as possible in our current jungle of endless signs, logos and commercial advertising.
Artists include: 108 from Alessandria, El Gato Chimney, Orticanoodles, Ozmo, Pho, Santy and Termine Growth from Milan, Lucamaleonte and the Sten/Lex duo from Rome.
