UPDATE: More insanity from Australia-Girl gets 3 months in jail for first offense
UPDATE: Her sentence was reduced on appeal so she won't go to jail. Finally some common sense is applied
Previously:
She wrote her name on a cafe wall with a marker. The cafe wants $200 AUD for restitution. And yet somehow this resulted in a 3-month jail sentence for Cheyene Back, a first offender. This cruel and unusual punishment, way out of proportion to the crime, is counterproductive in terms of social outcomes -- and not what one would expect from a civilized country. Did she even have a lawyer?

Illegal Only magazine from Poland
Another great graffiti magazine has recently come out of Poland, Illegal Only. It is free, downloadable, Mac/Windows - Flash. This format is really cool, because the pages turn quickly and it has some music and video also.
But the best thing is the photography.
Issue 3 features Odessa, Ukraine, and it's something you've got to see. Here is a taste:
Of course they want your artful bombing photos too.

This great website supports the book of the same name. There is lots of LA history online here, and it's a great read. The book is amazing and huge. You must get one. It has more than 900 pictures, including a CD-ROM. The website has additional material and commentary.

Tony Silver - Style Wars filmmaker - RIP
UPDATE: 149th St has posted an obituary. See the link above.
"We lost a beloved friend this weekend and respectfully mourn with his family and the thousands of kids, artists and fans who took inspiration from his classic film Style Wars.
"I've been a close friend of Tony's for many years and have had a special attachment to him as a person who had a great depth of intellect in all areas of his life. As a mentor and friend I have known him for his appreciation for the art of life and the life of art in others, that is why he made Style Wars and Facing the Audience a film about Marshall Arisman.
"Many of you know that I have sought to extend the legacy of his work online with the website, a labor of love I have been doing since the beginning of the internet. It was this collaboration between him, Henry and myself that helped bring more people to know and support the film. It is this collaboration that will continue on as the website goes into its next phase, realizing the enormous effect of his work and legacy on the global graffiti community.
"You can post any comments and condolences at myspace.com/stylewars
"Thank you Tony, and thank you Lisa Silver for caring for our friend.

Those other writers and their beef -- let's hear it for the WGA
If online content is worth arresting grannies over, the corporations need to pay the people who create the material. Otherwise, it's all youtube.

The King of Kowloon, RIP
" A poor and crippled Hong Kong man who became a cultural icon for his unique Chinese-style street graffiti has died at the age of 86, sparking nostalgic calls to preserve his vanishing legacy.
Tsang Tsou-choi, dubbed "The King of Kowloon" after the district he lived in -- was a Hong Kong original, who never saw himself as an artist but was hailed internationally as one.
... Tsang spent five decades roaming the metropolis -- often shirtless and on crutches -- scrawling his idiosyncratic calligraphy on lamp-posts, walls, phone boxes, pedestrian underpasses and electrical boxes."
Update: I made an RIP page for Mr Tsang and you can send your photos for me to add, if you wish.
