Updated the mgamon user-interface to identify each of the various kinds of agents (hm's, servents, and clients) via different colors.
The names in the list now show the atype and srv_name fields BEFORE the aspec field (instead of the other way round, as it used to be).
When the first agent appears on the monitor, it automatically displays its detailed info in the "details" box.
When you switch between the various lists in the monitor UI, the detail window automatically switches to the first agent entry in that list.

Committed the new and updated mediaboard for the PalmPilot: the MASH MediaPad. The pilot executable is in mash-1/tgmb/client/mediapad.prc
Updated the RMX module to use AS1 instead of TACC.
Got rid of old TCP classes, and substituted them with the tcl-only TCP classes.
Added a new module tgmb/gateway/palm-bmp that encapsulates the GIF-to-PalmPilotBitmap convertor
Updated the tcl/tgmb module to use AS1 instead of TACC
Fixed bugs in SRM1.0 and mb. These bugs mean that the RMX and the mb clients may behave weirdly if there is an old mb client in the session.
undid some comments in mash-tclinit.cc that caused smash to not load up the startup tcl code.
got rid of references to ../tcl8.0/library/http2.0/http.tcl from the AS1 code. smash links this file in statically. So the reference is no longer required.

Modified the core network object to use host byte ordering cosistently for port numbers. I think I have fixed all the code, so hopefully no one should see any problems.
Modified the recv API in the Network object to retrieve both addr and port of the remote side (rather than just addr, as was the original case). All C++ code has been updated to use the new API, although I didn't propagate the new API all the way up to Tcl.
The only exception is the AnnounceListenManager class where the port is passed up to the recv_announcement method. This lets you disambiguate between different sources on the same machine.

Added a new configure.in.srm file which lets you select between the stand-alone and MASH versions of the SRMv2 library. The default is to use the stand-alone version. You can override that and link in the MASH version by using the -enable-mashsrm flag to configure. You can use the -with-srm=[path] flag to specify location of the SRM library to configure. The default is ../srm2.0 You can disable SRMv2 completely by specifying -without-srm, although if it can't find the library in any of the default places, configure will silently disable it.

Upgraded mashcast to v2; the new casting director and RemoteController applet reside in tcl/applications/mashcast
- You can start mashcast from the command line:

- -makeproxy creates an SRMv2_CacheProxy object in the process space of the mashcast application. If you already have an SRMv2_CacheProxy set up on your machine, you don't need this flag.
- Use -proxyport to specify the listen port for the proxy. The default is 3468
- Use -mungeurls if you do not wish to set the proxy in your browser. The mashcast application will then munge the URL by prepending the proxy location before sending it to the browser.
- Use -noremotectrl if you do not wish to use the Java RemoteController class. This will cause mashcast to use "netscape -remote" instead. Of course, this'll only work on UNIX
- Use -remotectrl to specify the port for the RemoteController to connect back to. The default is 3470.
- You can specify the remote control port in one of 2 ways to the Java applet - either by using a <param name="applet_port" value=port#> tag, or by appending ?port# to the URL of the HTML page that contains the applet.

- "Rewrote" tcl-expand.tcl, so import during make-time takes two-thirds the original time. The main fix was to move a regsub from the main loop that parses every line in the source file to inside an if clause that first does a simple string match and only if that succeeds, performs the regsub.

- Added ability to import objects from a web server, as opposed to just local file-server (by specifying the TCLCL_IMPORT_DIRS environment variable). Rather than generating scripts in advance using tcl-expand.tcl, now we can just publish a variation of main.tcl as a complete mashlet and the necessary object code will be imported as needed. (Yes, startup is slower than if you use the monolithic version of the script, i.e. after the import commands have been expanded. And yes, it's even slower if you are fetching objects across web instead of local filesystem; Yatin suggested I cache objects that get downloaded, which I will leave for later.) The implementation is pretty rudimentary and entailed...
  - Augmenting mash interpreter's "source" procedure to accept EITHER a URL or local filename
  - Augmenting the mash interpreter's "import" procedure to accept EITHER URLs or local filenames in the importTables it processes
  - Modifying "mkImportTable" script to accept as its args, a list of filenames AND/OR URLs
  - Creating a script to publish the mashlets in our tcl-tree and modifying webupdate to do so every night
  - To offer an example of a dynamically generated mashlet, modified mash_server to return a short mash script with the "x-mash/x-script" mimetype, rather than an sdp announcement with the "application/x-sd" mimetype, when "view" is selected. The mashlet returned sets the TCLCL_IMPORT_DIRS env var to the url where the objects are published on the mash machine so that it will fetch all the objects it needs from the web-server instead of your local filesystem.
- A couple things to note...
  - Rather than TCLCL_IMPORT, use TCLCL_IMPORT_DIRS
  - If haven't done so recently, update, reconfigure, and make in your tclcl directory so that the http library, tcl-import.tcl, tcl-http.tcl are incoporated.
  - mkImportTable now redirects itself to smash rather than tclsh so make sure smash is in your path.

- Reworked RLM implementation. A single implementation (in tcl/net/rlm.tcl) is now shared between mash and ns. A subclass (in tcl/net/rlm-mash.tcl) handles mash-specific RLM operation. See the documentation for the MMG class in otcldoc for further details.
- NetworkManager now runs RLM if there are multiple layers and the useRLM option is set.

- Changed upcall on packet loss (Source::notify) to include the layer on which the loss occured as an argument.

- Added -sdp and -sdpFile options to MuiApplication so that helper applications and plugins (or even a user) can provide sdp announcements in either a stream of data or in a file, rather than having to process the announcement into the appropriate MuiApplication args (like -a, -v, -mb, etc.) themselves.

- Added some methods to UserApplication/MUI for parsing an sdp announcement into the arguments for the mui application, much like they are parsed for vic, vat, and mb. Previously, mplug and nsdr only parsed out the specs from the announcement.
- Originally, under the premise that Applications should be standalone, did not allow them to take a widget-path as an argument in which to pack ui. Now, realized that Applications ought to take a widget-path in which to pack their UI, so that the application can be embedded, for example in a browser, as is done by MPlug.

- Added two new parameters to prefs-mplug (for UNIX): mplug.stdout and mplug.stderr. You can add these parameters to your ~/.mash/prefs-mplug file and specify a filename to redirect stdout and stderr (respectively) to. This option is not used on Windows, since MASH on Windows has its own console where all output is redirected to.

- MuiApplication is now capable of accepting any combination of the specs (-mb -v -a) as long as at least one is supplied. This enables "custom" UI's to be created given an SDP announcement, as can be demonstrated by selecting SDP announcements from mash_server. I will continue to improve the ui permutations; just wanted to commit something that worked.
- Fixed mui executable to work in MPlug again.
- A little progress on flexible video switching for UIs...
  - Created VideoBoxManager class to take over some methods from MuiUI and VideoBox. Starting to make switching policy less hacky by allowing a default cname or nickname list to be provided.
  - Started to add drag-and-drop capability for ActiveSources. Want to reorg a bit before continue.
  - Eliminated UserWindow/Mui class.

- The mash_server now has the ability to view sessions using the mimetype application/x-sd.
- The rec_agent cleans up after itself by deleting archive modules that never actually received streams to record.
- A status_checker script now lives in the tcl/applications/mash_server directory. This simple script periodically pings the mash_server to make sure the server remains alive. If a ping fails, the checker sends notification via email and attempts to restart the server.
- When the mash_server starts up, the rec_agent now reads from a cache containing scheduled recordings to reschedule recordings and the sdp_agent does the same to restore its list of sessions.

- Decomposing VicUI. Moved some of it's methods into other objects, VisualFrame, ActiveSourceManager, UISrcList, and UISrcListWindow, to enhance reuse and simplify the VicUI object.
  - Moved some of VicUI's methods into a new object, VisualFrame so that all video apps can create these tk frames and reuse these methods.
  - Moved some of VicUI's methods (bump, really_activate, redecorate) to a new object, ActiveSourceManager, which is also an observer of VideoAgent. It is used to dispatch and manage ActiveSources. It is now flexible enough to layout the ActiveSources' VideoWidgets in either a horizontal or vertical grid.
  - Since they didn't have much in common, VicUI is no longer a subclass of UISrcList. They are now separate objects, both which are observers of VideoAgent.
  - UISrcList is no longer subclassed from TopLevelWindow, so that it's contents can now be embedded in any frame, regardless of whether or not it is a TopLevelWindow. You can now use a new class, UISrcListWindow, to embed the UISrcList in a TopLevelWindow for you, as vic does.
- Started merging some of the MuiUI methods that had been overriding VicUI methods for the mui application.
- Eliminated the need for the MSP_VicUI & MSP_VatUI by pushing their methods into VicUI and VatUI for reuse.
- Previously, a ControlMenu was passed as an argument when creating an ActiveSource or UserWindow. Since, a ControlMenu should not be required in order to create an ActiveSource or UserWindow (though an ActiveSource and UserWindow should be required in order to create a ControlMenu, being that it is esentially a UI for controlling the behavior of these objects), they are no longer arguments to the init methods of these objects. They were originally sent as arguments so that the ControlMenu's tkvars, useHardwareDecode and muteNewSources, could be dynamically accessed, but now instead, for a ui to create a ControlMenu, it must implement the accessor methods, use_hw_decode and mute_new_sources.
- Adding default 'appname' of "mash" to all objects so that even if the programmer doesn't instantiate an Application object, other objects will be able to do "$self get_option appname". For cases in which the programmer instantiates an Application object, the appname will be overridden. An 'appname' can be useful for including in error messages or titles displayed for ui components.
- Added the PaneManager object which sets up vertical/horizontal panes offering the user a grip with which to adjust the boundary between them.

- In tcl/applications/uc: ('universal client'... need a better name)
  added a "meta" application that (currently) acts as a thin wrapper for client UIs. If no client-UI / address pairs are specified on the command line, it defaults to a list of Berkeley CoLab serial control applications. (I'll keep the servers running.)
  Currently, all the device interfaces share state amongst the server and multiple client instantiations -- other users' updates will be reflected to you (for better or worse).
  Of course, needs work on many fronts -- this is a quick, preliminary cut. But please feel free to give it a try. ("bin/mash tcl/applications/uc/main.tcl")

- Implemented proxy announcements -- when a new session is created in nsdr, it may be configured to carry out an expanding ring search to contact sdfor which it then contacts via unicast and gives it the program to advertise on its behalf. More details and lots of fixes forthcoming...

- Added the functionality (in SystemArchive and SessionCatalog) to allow the Rec_Agent to write the SDP Message information to the catalog file. This will be used to playback a session using Netscape.
- Moved the top-level HTML pages to the mash_server/html/ directory so that the MASH_Server can serve-up those pages dynamically rather than going to some public_html directory and hard-coding the server and port number.
- Added files to start support for the playback tool. Currently, the functionality of the HTTP Play_Agent involves display the current SDP archive.

- Rather than including mediaboard within mui by embedding a "new MBApp", now actually re-assembling & integrating the behavior of MBApp into MuiApplication.

- To make it easier to integrate VicApplication, VatApplication, and MBApp, changed some instvar and resource names to avoid conflicts that could result from less-specific names...

- First cut at dynamic RTP payload types. vic and vat can receive streams that use a dynamic PT by using the -map command line argument. For example, vic -map 120:pvh ... will decode packets with a PT field of 120 as PVH. The sending side requires a simple change to the encoder that has been made only to the PVH codec so far.
- Added Configuration::register_list_option which is similar to register_option but the argument may appear multiple times on the command line and all arguments will be added to a single list. (See otcldoc for a more complete explanation).

- Added a mash_server module to the applications directory. The mash_server is a HTTP server that can integrate multiple MASH components. So far, I have tested the server with two tools, an SDP Announcer and SDP Recorder (the result looks similar to the demo I had a couple weeks ago). To run the mash_server, do the following:
  - Add mash_server to APPS list in Makefile.in.
  - Reconfigure.
  - In the .mash directory, make three new prefs files: prefs-sdp, prefs-rec, and prefs-agent. In the prefs-sdp file, specify the "sessions_dir" prefs which is the directory where new SDP announcements will be stored. In the prefs-rec file, specify the "archive_dir" and "schedule_dir" directories. In the prefs-agent file, specify the "html_dir" where the HTML files used by the DynamicHTMLifier can be found.
  This server is meant to make it easy to HTMLify MASH components. To plug-in a component, the class must have the following characteristics:
  - Inherit from HTTP_Agent (applications/mash_server/http_agent.tcl).
  - Implement the method handle_request that handles a HTTP request and returns a list containing the HTML page to be returned and the status code.
  - To add this agent to the mash_server, use the add_agent method (see applications/mash_server/main.tcl).
  - Note: The DynamicHTMLifier is a nice way to produce dynamic HTML pages on the fly (see applications/mash_server/dynamic_html.tcl).
  I also changed the following things in the process of implementing the mash_server.
  - Added a record_program method to the ArchiveSystem object (mash-1/tcl/archive/archive-system.tcl). This method takes a Program and a tag as parameters and records all media related to the Program by calling record_rtp_session and record_wb_session accordingly.
  - Added several methods to the SDPMessage and SDPTime classes (mash-1/tcl/common/sdp.tcl) to make htmlifying message information easier.
  - Changed the HTTP_Server object (mash-1/tcl/net/http_server.tcl) so that is more like a general HTTP server. I also added the ability to return any general reply, not only OK replies.
  - Removed the files from the tcl/sdpserver directory. This was the start of what became mash_server.

- Cleaned up tcp.tcl. Added hooks to TCP/Server, so you shouldn't have to subclass it just to define the create_channel procedure. TCP/Server::open now accepts two arguments: port and create_channel.
  - create_channel may be the name of a class. TCP/Server::create_channel will then create an object of that class when it receives a new connection.
  - It may be a command to invoke, in which case TCP/Server::create_channel appends the Tcl channel id associated with the new connection to the command and invokes it.
  - You can completely leave out the second argument to open and just redefine TCP/Server::create_channel in a sub-class.
- The class that you create for the new connection on the server-side must be sub-classed from TCP (not TCP/Client) and if you define your own command to invoke for creating this object (in TCP/Server::open), then you must remember to invoke "$obj open $chan" on the object that you just created

- Added classes CuesSender and CuesReceiver. The two classes provide the functionality of sending and receiving awareness cues. The cues currently available are "raise hand", "speak louder", "I agree" and "I disagree". You create an instance of these classes by passing it a window path, and a global coordination bus object.
  - CuesSender makes a gui for the cues; there is just one format now. It is a list of checkbuttons with the cues bitmaps next to them. It also sends the cues messages on the global coordination bus.
  - CuesReceiver is similar to CuesSender, it also creates a gui for blinking cues, and it is just a list of the cues images. You can specify the size of the images, it is just sm and lg for now.
- Changed vic and vat so they use CuesSender and CuesReceiver to receive and send cues. You invoke the cues by the command line argument -useCues. If this argument is not used, the applications do not include the cues images and buttons in the ui.
  - The cues images are displayed on the switcher windows in vic.
  - The cues buttons are displayed at the bottom of vat.
- Also fixed a bug I committed in next_active_src in ui-windows.tcl.

This is a temporary fix to the problem that the current archive architecture does not allow temporal manipulation on a stream granularity. When this is fixed, we can go back to a sigle lts. ArchiveStream now has an 'offset_' parameter that offsets the stream's lts by the given amount of seconds. This enables the offsetting of streams w.r.t each other in a single session.

- [srmv1] fixed srmv1 encryption bug. crypt-des was setting bit 14 to 1 when padding is needed. In srmhdr, this is part of 'version'. Thus, packets got dropped by srm when padding is added and the padding bit set. To fix this (for now), 'version' is shifted to bits 7 & 8. Bit 13 is set to 1 always so that older versions of srm can 'receive' new data. Luckily bit 14 will never be set for non-encrypted packets, so for now we remain backward compatible.

Note that if the all arguments to an application are specified with switches, this information is sufficient for a 'usage' statement. Otherwise, an application should derive its own usage statement and use this procedure as part of the error message.

- [audio ui] added inputGain amd outGain defaults to application-vat so that there will be a default value for unrecognized devices. But, it seems dangerous to me not to look at the arg passed to getpkt(), so I put that check back in (generally, timers should be viewed as soft - when a timeout happens you take action based on the current time your read, not on the implicit time of when you knew the timer was supposed to fire.)
- Added destructors to various archive objects. This allows us to deallocate recorder objects gracefully so we can re-record without exiting and re-starting.
- Added a key binding for "t" to toggle video transmission in vic. This is probably a bit too dangerous (i.e., too easy to start transmitting a stream when you didn't mean to).

- Fixed up import problems that resulted from Elan's changes. Now that import allows the implementation of a class to come from multiple files, we have to be careful about how we play games with overriding methods in various classes. For example, headless vic modified various VicUI methods in certain ways, but this caused that file to be imported with normal vic. The solution is simply to avoid the use of these questionable practices... (e.g., by subclassing the classes we wish to modify).

- More work on Configuration architecture. The options_ hack in tclcl was too hard to understand and explain (and caused some tcl problems for ns). So this is now removed. We were trying to do dynamic binding of the options data base so that option lookup depended on the context of where the object was created. I think we should give up since there are actually very few configuration options require this. In those cases, we should instead use a well-defined API for conveying the parameters to the underlying object(s). (The obvious example is configuring several network session objects in archive playback.) An exception to this rule is that we want to be able to associate option defaults with the classes that use them. This is easy - just put them in the class object as class variables (Yatin's suggestion). The problem is that you can't have different sets of defaults for different *instances*, but we've decided to give up on this. For example, if you say

  then get_option called within the Foo class (or any sublcass) on opt1 or opt2 will return the indicated values and so forth.

  - The object is created automatically upon startup and its name is stored in the global variable mash(console)
  - The following methods are defined: show, hide, toggle, set_title, set_buffer_size, alloc, and free.
  - Initially the console is hidden, by default. Eventually I'll add command-line flags to control the console behavior on startup
  - The console can be shown/hidden from the "System" menu of the main Tk window "." The system menu is the menu that can be accessed by clicking on the top-left corner of the window's titlebar. It takes about a second after the app has started for the menu item to appear in that window.

- Eliminated Network::filter-own method and logic because packets loopbed back in the kernel should always be ignored (instead, the Session/RTP loopback flag should be enabled). This precludes the optimizaiton where we allow looped-back packets through and thus can turn off the session level loopback, but this is rare and only make sense for video (currently), i.e., video is the only media that loops it signal as part of the app (and that's only when there's a UI that wants to do this as in vic). This change also means that we no longer need noloopback_broken_ since we always do the filter check now (it's actually an inexpensive check). But more importantly, filtering looped back packets at the network layer simplifies the RTP loop detection code (because it doesn't also have to worry about distinguish locally looped back packets from network gateway loops). The loopback detection algorithm still needs to be re-integrated and implemented fully to spec...

- Added OTcl TCP classes that are simply OTcl wrappers for Tcl's socket command. See tcl/net/tcp.tcl. This class subsumes existing C++ modules that do the same. These sockets can be easily used from C++ by simple passing a Tcl channel ID to whatever object wants access and using the standard Tcl channel API.
- Modified tcl/rtsp/msp/client-rtsp.tcl to use the new OTcl TCP class. This eliminates the need for rtsp/client.*, so these files have been deleted (note that they are still retrievable from the repository if needed). Updated Makefile.in to reflect this change. We can also easily eliminate the C++ server code for rtsp, but this hasn't yet been done.

- Fixed Vic/VatApplication so they create toplevel windows with unique names (and thus avoid collision when embedded in same app).
- Deleted global fatal, warn, and debug procs and replaced with new Log class. Added Object::fatal, Object::warn, and Object:debug so any mash object can call these methods in itself. They end up calling the Log class but they could be overridden at some point in the future so that logging can be specialized on a per-object basis.
- Changed a bunch of calls to warn etc to use $self. Also, replaced these calls with return values of errors where it made sense, e.g., in AddressBlock class and install-key.

- Added support for a simple, java-like import command to tclcl and merged it with vic and all of vic's modules. By default, import directives are ignored so as to not break existing apps. "import" behaves like the tcl source command except it includes the file only once (even when used multiple times) and the OTcl class name is specified instead of the actual file. To facilitate this, import assumes the existence of a file called importTable that contains the mappings (... maybe this should be built on demand). mash-1/mkImportTable creates this table from a list of tcl input files.

- Finished integration of first version of Configuration class and made major changes to the Application base class API to reflect this. Updated most of the application classes to use the new approach, but did only limited testing. A few of the apps do not work. Many all of the old-style X resources don't work, and instead, we are moving to a model where user preferences are stored in a configuration database in $HOME/.mash. This makes the reliance upon this type of configuration less critical and thus easier to move across the windows/unix barrier. For example, the configuration file could be built from the software setup phase in windows (e.g., netmeeting, placeware, etc all do this).
- Documented most of the Application and VicApplication methods for mashdoc. Converted many methods from instproc to public/private, but we still have a long way to go.
- Started to convert Application::init_local to Application::load_preferences but the transition is not yet fully complete. load_preferences loads various options info from ~/.mash/prefs*.
- Removed the -u flag from all apps and the -A flag from vic.
- The player/recorder apps currently violate our new model because they create multiple application objects. This should be relatively easy to fix with the more flexible Configuration class.
- Changed syntax of nsdr -prox and -sap flags to better match the new command-line processing algorithm. The old syntax:

- Integrated first cut at Configuration class, which is a new abstraction that gives us a front-end to the tk options database and works around its many problems. In particular, the tools will no longer need a -name argument to run correctly (which makes it easier to run mash scripts off a web server).

Bug fixes from Chad F. Jones:
- Bug: unable to disable encryption once enabled. This was addressed by modifying "NetworkManager set_key" in tcl/net/network.tcl so that it checks to see if key_ is blank. If it is blank, then encryption is turned off. This is consistent to the calls made to set_key elsewhere in the source code.
- Bug: unable to switch types of encryption once one is used. This was addressed by adding a fmt_ variable to NetworkManager in /tcl/net/network.tcl; and checking to see if fmt_ has changed with each call to set_key. If the fmt_ has changed, then a set of new crypt objects is created with the new fmt.
- Suggested change: slightly enlarged buffer in net/net.cc for decryption. This is a suggested change based on my work with crypt objects. Sometimes the decrypted size is slightly larger than that allocated by the network object. Basically, the change is just always making the buffer 8 bytes larger than necessary when decrypting. The additional memory isn't significant and this small change makes the code more robust when different crypt objects are added to the code base.

- Moved bandwidth units in grabber, transmitter and session-rtp to be bit/sec rather than kbps. This should prevent the "0" bandwidth problems with SCUBA which were caused by a combination of the coarse granularity (1kb/s) of the bandwidth adjustments along with a desire to truncate rather than round in the computation so as to under-allocate bandwidth rather than over-allocate.
  Note: Since this change has been made to some of the most senstive code in mash, in particular the bandwidth computations in grabber, sesison-rtp, tranmitter, agent-rtp and agent-video, if there are problems - this is the first delta to look at.

- Enabled initial active_check in mbgw and sdgw. This was commented out - don't remember why. Seems like there has to be an initial "alive" check.

- Created first cut of AnnounceListenManager that can run using ns rather than mash. This is incredibly useful in using exactly the same code to simulate mash control agents as is run in the actual executable. An example of this is in tcl/hmsim which simulates the birth-death process of the MeGa host manager using completely unmodified code from tcl/mega and tcl/hm.
  The port between ns and mash is in ns-mash.tcl which the ns version of the AnnounceListenManager is in al-ns.tcl.
  There are many parts that are still very ad hoc and some which require much more work in order to make general, but the basics are there and this experiment has already proven very succesful.

First cut at compiling under tcl/tk 8.0.
- created compat/tkcompat.* to provide tk80 functionality in tk42. These are really kludges. I assume that we will not be using them for long.
- Tk_GetFontStruct, Tk_FreeFontStruct, Tk_NameofFontStruct et. all procedures are being superceded by functions of the same name but without struct. For tk42, there is a typedef of Tk_Font to XFontStruct*. Note that names of fonts under 8.0 is can be more "friendly" e.g "times 8". See tk80 docs for details.
- otcl has been updated. Included patch from vint and also a kludge to prevent a memory error
- All procedures with parameters named "class" will no longer work. Changed them to className. This is because OTcl pass in self and class as the parameters... to the invisible __OTclProc__.
- tcl_rcFileName in mash-tkinit.cc changed from .mashrc to .mash-startup since it is supposed to be a Tcl script Vs a Xresource file.
- For windows, don't hardwire vic and vat's colors for sliders.
- Added --with-tcl-ver and --with-tk-ver to specify non-default version --> --numbers. The default version is still 7.6 and 4.2, to compile with 8.0, do --with-tcl-ver=8.0 and --with-tk-ver=7.6, in addition to the usual --> --with-tcl=... amd --with-tk=... --

- Changed the bps() routine in grabber to decrease the latency associated with a change from a very low bandwidth to a very high one. The latency is caused by the fact that we have to wait for the previous timeout (at the low bandwidth) before the new bandwidth takes effect. This is undesirelable in situations where you want the response to be more immediate, like in a SCUBA controlled session. Basically what we do is readjust the frameclock to reflect the new bandwidth and reset the timer.

- .devel is now obsolete. Having it will still do what it always did. But you should try to get away from it.
- The following flags have been added:
- Now that the .devel file has gone away, there is a new "more general" mechanism to specify a set of default options. Simply include a .configure file in your toplevel mash-1 directory and put in all the command-line options to configure on the first line of that file. configure will automatically read them in. The "only" caveat is that if there are spaces within a command line arg, that won't quite work.
- Moved mash-specific configuration code to a new file, configure.in.mash.
- The Linux release build is now automated. The -enable-release flag does the right thing. You do need static versions of all libraries, though, to be able to make a release build of the Linux binaries.

- Removed last vestige of "V" in core, common modules. Toward this end, added a couple new static methods to the Application class. All toplevel windows should now be created by calling "Application toplevel" (not all the code has been updated yet). There are still many uses of it in individual tools, but there is no longer any common code that relies upon it. The next still is to clean up the tools and eliminate all uses of "V".
- Made first pass over objectification of Titler. It's mostly ported but hasn't been tested and one more change is needed (that relies on the new coordination bus ).

- Removed a bunch of old initialization code from controller.cc to Tcl since it's much easier to get at user options there. This eliminated all the debugging placeholder messages from this module.
- Added a bunch of OTcl class variable initializers to eliminate warnings.
- Reworked the API between the audio arbiter and the audio GUI to use the Observer infrastructure. This eliminated a bunch of global variables (which was buggy anyway because they were tkvar's in other places).
- Fixed up the audio agent to defer allocation of the controller until after we successfully open the underlying device. At that point we can decide whether or not that device is full or half duplex and build the right type of controller. This bug was pointed out by Angie Schuett.

- Added support for -X. Now any configuration option (i.e., X resource under unix) can be specified on the command line using the form "-X resource=value", where resource is the resource name.
- Added a check and a sensible error message for the case when "-name" is not specified.
- Objectified a bunch more code, including much cleanup in the audio UI and panel manipulation code. Many globals are now "tkvars". Eliminated "AGENT" hack.
- Eliminated mk.entry proc. We should now use Entry class. (A number of uses still need to be updated.)
- Integrated a new (but backward compatible) approach for configuring and querying user options. The OTcl base class now has a method called "get_option", which is functionally eqivalent to the old "resource" proc. By default, get_option calls [Application instance] to get the global application object, then it queries this object for the resource. The nice thing about this approach is that the options selection mechanism can now be specified on a per-object basis (Teck's original idea) but the default behavior is "global" and reasonable. Further, it's very easy to override the global behavior by simply attaching an "-optionsFrom" argument to "new", which takes an object that implements the options API. For example, of "optionsDB" is my options database object and I want to create an object of type Foo that uses my specifialized database, I can say:

- Changed many instances of "resource" and "yesno" to use "$self get_option" and "$self yesno" to reflect the above change, and many instances of "smallfont" to "$self get_option smallfont".

- Changed API to TkWidget so that the Tk window is created from an "init" method rather than in the constructor. By deferring the window's creation, we can instead have the OTcl init method run later and do the creation (i.e., so it can utilize Otcl method args that aren't available when the object is allocated). Updated subclasses that use TkWidget to reflect the change.

- Created AddressBlock class for parsing multicast address specifications so Network class doesn't have to do this anymore. Eliminated Network::construct to eliminate some problems with the current network reconfiguration process. These changes seem stable but aren't completely done. We still need to integrate the RLM functionality into the NetworkManager class and add hooks to more cleanly reconfigure the network (by caching the address block in the Network object).

- Added code to the voxware audio module to be able to select mic vs line-in. The code should query the driver for device capabilities, but for now, we assume the board has a mic and line-in (as does the GUS PnP).
- Fixed bug in application-vat.tcl where interpretation of -C and -B arguments was swapped. This manifested itself by generating a huge load of session traffic when specifying -C.

Win32 port changes
- new file: makefile.vc

  Add "windows.h" before each include of "winsock.h". Some definitions are not found otherwise. We are using precompiled headers, so this should not affect speed too much.
- changed includes of "Tcl.h" to tclcl.h (see change log of Tcl(CL) for details.
- undef out fork() calls for win32 in tcpchan.cc, since the mechanisms are quite different for forking (see CreateProcess() and CreateThread() in the MSDN library.)
- new files win32.c and win32x.c that implements some missing functions in win32. They are taken and modified from vic-2.8 source code. Note that some functions like getuid() is returning constant values in win32. Stderr/out is now directed to a 'console' instead of using a message box for each line printed. A tkConsole will appear when a script file is not supplied.
- new module: makedep2 by David M. Miller of Business Visions Inc. (public domain). Used for generating dependencies in win32. I hacked it up a little bit (see makedep.c for more info). MAkefile.vc is changed to include the file 'mkdeps' which is generated by makdep2. Note that to save time when generating dependencies, I purposely excluded system directories.

Wrote glue to allow recording to be started from sdr. record_session accepts data from sdr, parses it, and starts a recorder on the specified address.

Cleaned up the code for using GIF objects in Tcl code
- Use the image2tcl utility to convert GIF files into tcl source that can be included in mash scripts. See the tcl/ui_tools/okcancel.tcl target in Makefile.in for an example of converting GIF files to tcl.
- Use the -image option (where is the name specified to image2tcl) to use the gif image in Tk widgets.
- If you wish to use transparent GIFs, use the standard giftrans utility (the source is available from http://www-genome.wi.mit.edu/WWW/tools/graphics/Unix/giftrans/giftrans.c) to convert the GIF to a transparent GIF and then run it through image2tcl. Tk can't handle transparent GIFs very gracefully; what you can do is specify beforehand what color to use for the transparent region. Set the global Tcl variable TRANSPARENT_GIF_COLOR to the appropriate color, or use the transparent_gif procedure defined in tcl/ui_tools/ui-util.tcl. Remember to set this variable before sourcing the files that contain the GIF objects.

Added in RTP Gateway support. This involved the following changes:
- Added new objects: Transcoder, JPEGTranscoder, H261Transcoder, RTPGWSession which do the obvious things.
- Broke out the conditional replenishment code from the grabber, and created a ConditionalReplenisher class since the Transcoder needs it as well.
- CoordBus is an OTcl class which has a handler per instance. Thus, you set the dispatch table per instance. The handler is now set to the instproc 'confbusHandler' (i.e., you don't need to pass it to the object).
- Cleaned up RTP OTcl class. All RTP admin operations should be put there. In particular, moved the init_local which determined rtpName and rtpEmail to RTPApplication. Added rtp_representation instproc to RTP for determining the best representation for an RTP source (used to be called something else in one of the util files).
- Added srcid parameter to BufferPool since local srcid is not always what we want (e.g. transcoders).
- Added a MultiInputManager class. This class allows to set up applications with two flow paths: one for data, and the other for control. Thus, you can instance two (new) modules, DataInputHandler and ControlInputHandler, in a MultiInputManager which provides hooks to received control and data packets.
- Source::lookup() now takes the name of the session requesting the lookup for applications that require pointers to the session on which the source appeared.
- Created a PacketReplicator class ("Replicator/Packet" in OTcl) which implements a one-to-many fan-out of the input pktbuf. See misc/replicator.cc for details.

- Moved audio device initialization from callee into audio agent constructor since too much of the audio agent class depends on the existence of an underlying C++ audio object.
- Removed Unix/Windows UI differentation below VatUI/VicUI OTcl classes. I believe the Windows case can be handled more gracefully.
- Renamed audio ControlMenu as AudioControlMenu to avoid conflict with vic (still need to rename video couterpart).
- Changed VicUI/VatUI to take pathname as an argument rather than assume the toplevel "." window. This allows us to create multiple UI's in a single mash process.
- Reformatted CHANGE log as in ns (bold instead of italics for dates).
- Fixed some bugs in Makefile (another GNU make feature removed and a trailing slash that caused a problem with Irix make)
- Commented out debugging printf in FCAMgr.

Fixed problem that was causing "jittery video". The grab routine used to continue to grab frames if the system wasn't "too far behind". As long as the coder could almost keep (within 200ms of real time), the loop would continue. The fix is to only decode one frame per grab and schedule a zero-length timer if we're behind (so that other events can be dispatched in the meantime). There is probably still a problem somewhere in the code (maybe in the decode path) because this symptom should have manifested itself in the old version of vic... Even so, I believe this change is better than what we previously had here.

Fixed bug in h.261 encoder that caused rate control to break. Fixed bug in Transmitter where an instance variable was shadowed and bind() was called twice causing an inconsistency to happen which manifested itself in the fact that the tranmission rate was not being updated. Finally, fixed vic control menu problem where the frame and bit rate indicators where not being updated.

Created two new useful and re-usable otcl classes from the vat sourc code. The AudioArbiter class implements negotiated access to the audio device using the Coordination Bus; the AudioPanel class is a reusuable user interface element that houses the audio meters and volume sliders.

Added audio objects from vat-4.0b2 and ported to mash OTcl framework. Ported portions of vat tcl, in part for the new audio agent API and in part as an example of how to use the MASH objects to implement vat. The official vat implementation is still maintained and distributed from LBL.

- reworked Source class so that Source::Layer objects are now derived from TclObject. Tcl now creates the layers and installs them in the Source object. Morever, stats across layers are now computed in tcl instead of c++.
- Eliminated V(encoder) and V(grabber).
- Fixed several bugs in VideoAgent class.
[SM] Incorporated Elan's module changes. Now everything that processes a frame or a packet buffer (or any data) is derived from the base Module class much like VuSystem. Removed notion of "frame type" from previous module because all type information is instead maintained in tcl. We no longer support RTPv1, ivs, or nv session types.
[SM] Major changes to Tcl/C++ object hierarchy. Now based entirely MIT's Object Tcl. All objects are created in and managed by Tcl (previously, the C++ side created many of the objects). The TclClass C++ base class replaces the old Matcher class. An OTcl class is created in C++ by statically declaring a derived subclass of TclClass. OTcl makes it easy to extend a class with new methods either on the C++ side or the Tcl side.
[SM] Changed packet handler API to take a pktbuf instead of a header and data buffers, i.e., changed from scatter-gather to contiguous buffering model. Convention is that decoder can hold onto pktbuf and must release it when done. This has the advantage that the code is simpler, but the disadvantage that hardware-compressed streams (like JPEG) must be copied (or we have to lay down a header in the capture buffer).
[SM] Changed pktbuf structure to be indepedent of unix msg header / iovec. Now unix compat is isolated to net.cc module.
[SM] Broke out buffer allocation routines into separate class. Buffers now distinct from transmitter class so we can use same hooks on the receive-side and loan out buffers to decoders.
[SM] Fixed bug with calculation of extended highest sequence number in reception reports. Reported by Bill Fenner.
[SM] Added experimental PVH layered video codec from Steven McCanne's dissertation work. Includes changes to grabber and replenishment algorithm to implement hierarchical conditional replenishment. (This work done during spring 1996.)
