This world map was created by Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667). Sanson and his descendents were important French cartographers. Nicolas Sanson was appointed "Geographe Ordinaire du Roi" by King Louis XIII. Sanson strongly believed that California was an island - as shown on this world map.
