Query/Modify the comp.lang.perl.misc database

This database keeps track of users and how often they have posted since the database begin (mid-June, 1996). It is used to automatically send FAQs to first-time posters.

The database records e-mail addresses in a reduced form (these reduced addresses are not necessarily valid and are not used to send e-mail). This is to avoid sending multiple copies of the FAQ to people who post from different machines within the one organization. The reduced form is user@organization.domain: gnat@deimos.frii.com and gnat@phobos.frii.com reduce to gnat@frii.com; gnat@mako.netlink.co.nz and gnat@mail.netlink.co.nz reduce to gnat@netlink.co.nz.

This reduction may mean that some first-time users will not be sent a copy of the FAQ. For instance, if gnat@users.frii.com posts before gnat@admin.frii.com posts, the admin address will not be sent a copy of the FAQ, because they both reduced to gnat@frii.com. The algorithm for reducing e-mail addresses attempts to be smart about foreign domains, but if you catch it making a mistake, please let me know.

You can query the database to see whether the database has a particular e-mail address in it, or register an e-mail address with the database.
