Assessing Audio and Video Quality in Multicast Conferencing
Real-time multimedia communication is particularly vulnerable to the effects
of network congestion. It has been proposed that bandwidth reservation
should be used to guarantee a certain quality of service (QoS) for multimedia
conferencing applications. However, in order to employ bandwidth reservation
effectively, we need to know how much bandwidth a particular application
requires. This depends largely on the quality at which different media
have to be delivered. Since end-users' perception of quality will determine
whether applications are successful, it is essential to establish
(a) what factors play the most important roles in perceived media quality
and
(b) the minimum and maximum media quality required by a particular user
group for a particular task. Identifying suitable methods and measurements
to determine perceived media quality is not straightforward. Relevant issues
and findings will be presented in this talk.
