Audio Encoding

There are a large number of audio encoding schemes in use, but the most widely used packet audio tool supports PCM, ADPCM, GSM, LPC1 and LPC4, so this is less of an issue, as conversion between these schemes using vat is simple. Hardware codecs also usually support a number of schemes, and so it is usually possible to find a scheme in common, even if this is often 64Kb/s PCM.

The MICE partners intend to experiment with higher quality audio during 1994, and this will cause greater interworking problems. This the role of the CMMC for audio format conversion will become greater. What these higher quality schemes are likely to be is not yet clear as there are a large number to choose from.
