No special communications facilities are installed specifically for MICE, although some links are being upgraded by the participants. A diagram of the communications is shown in Fig. 11. There are currently three International networks involved: EUROPANET, EBONE and the US Internet (although this is not one network, it's convenient for us to think of it as being so). In addition, the CMMC will support communications coming in over the ISDN. In each country there are National research networks, and these are connected to the International ones.
The international connections (with the National network in parentheses are:
The EUROPANET links in the above is now running at 2 Mbps; the EBONE links are currently (Jan '94) running at about 1.5 Mbps between France and Scandinavia, but at significantly less to the UK. There is an interconnect between EBONE and EUROPANET in Amsterdam, though that has a bandwidth of 512Kb/s, though this may be upgraded in the 1st quarter of 1994. The links to the US are running at 1 - 2 Mbps. There 30 64 Kbps channels of ISDN (Primary Rate) to UCL. However, it should be noted that the EBONE and the US Internet links also have substantial normal IP traffic.
A diagram of the infrastructure local to the CMMC is show in figure 12
