This is the W3C Proposed Recommendation of the Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) 2.0 specification. This document is a revision of the W3C Working Draft 01 March 2001, incorporating comments and suggestions received during the Last Call review. Also refer to the changes to this SMIL 2.0 Specification since Last Call.
The SYMM Working Group [members only] considers that all features in the SMIL 2.0 specification have been implemented at least twice in an interoperable way. The SYMM Working Group Charter [members only] defines this as the implementations having been developed independently by different organizations and each test in the SMIL 2.0 test suite has at least two passing implementations. The Implementation results are publicly released and are intended solely to be used as proof of SMIL 2.0 implementability. It is only a snap shot of the actual implementation behaviors at one moment of time, as these implementations may not be immediately available to the public. The interoperability data is not intended to be used for assessing or grading the performance of any individual implementation.
This document enters a Proposed Recommendation
review period. W3C Advisory Committee Members are invited to send formal
review comments until 05 July 2001 to w3t-smil2@w3.org, visible only to the W3C
Team.
The public is invited to send comments on this document to the public mailing
list www-smil@w3.org - (public archives).
After the review, the Director will announce the document's disposition: it may become a W3C Recommendation (possibly with minor changes). This announcement should not be expected sooner than 14 days after the end of the review.
The [XHTML+SMIL] Profile which appeared in previous working drafts is still in progress. It continues to be updated and will be published as a separate document when it is ready.
There are patent disclosures and license commitments associated with the SMIL 2.0 specification, these may be found on the SYMM Patent Statement page in conformance with W3C policy.
This document has been produced as part of the W3C Synchronized Multimedia Activity
of the W3C User Interface Domain. The goals of the SYMM Working Group are
discussed in the SYMM Working Group
charter [members only], (revised July 2000 from original charter
version).
The authors of this document are the SYMM Working Group members. Different
modules of the SMIL 2.0 have different editors.
The W3C staff contact for work on SMIL is Thierry MICHEL.
Publication as a Proposed Recommendation does not imply endorsement by the W3C membership. This is still a draft document and may be updated, replaced or obsoleted by other documents at any time. It is inappropriate to cite W3C Proposed Recommendations as other than "work in progress."
