Version: 1.5

Requirements:
PalmOS 3.5 - PalmOS 5.x

dot.gif (974 bytes) Introduction

Kid Paint is a simple sketching program, allowing for color filling and simple hand-drawing on a number of predefined pictures.

It can buy you some quiet time when you need it most and it surely develops your kid's artistic qualities.

Although advertised for kids, we have found Kid Paint to have excellent recreational effect on adults as well. We do recommend that you try it.

Note Kid Paint requires a color device, running Palm OS 3.5 and higher.

dot.gif (974 bytes)  Installation

Kid Paint comes either as a single, WinZip compressed file or as a single self-installing executable for Microsoft Windows® users. In both cases it contains a single program file, one or more data files with pictures and this manual.

If the distribution file has an ".exe" extension (e.g. KidPaint.exe) then you have the self-installing version of the package. All you have to do is double-click on it and follow the onscreen instructions.
Note: Only Microsoft Windows users will have to be able to run the file KidPaint.exe.

If the distribution file has a ".zip" extension (KidPaint.zip), then you can use it to install the application no matter what your host platform is. However, you will need an application which will extract the particular Palm OS files from the ZIP file. Your computer is most probably already equipped with program that can handle ZIP files. On Windows machines this is WinZip and on Apple machines this is StuffIt.

Just double-click on the file and if there is a program in your PC which can handle the ZIP file it will extract it.

From the extracted files, you need to install (double-click) on the following:

  • KidPaint.prc - this is the main program file
  • One of the KidPaintData.PDB files that can be found under the Pictures folder. This folder contains the picture collections organized by screen resolution. Note you should pick the appropriate resolution which matches your device capabilities. Otherwise the program will refuse to run or will display pictures with lower quality.

Kid Paint is mainly targeted towards children and is very simple to use.

The main application window displays a picture from the currently loaded collection. The painting tools are cut down to the possible minimum and are located at the bottom of the screen: they are the picture picker, the color picker, the drawing brush, the color painter, the spread and the erasing gum. Another few commands might be accessible through the application menu, but these are less commonly used and targeted for adults.

Selecting image to draw on

A list with available pictures from the current picture file can be displayed using the picture selection button. However, since this might be too hard for kids, the program also allows to switch to the previous or the next painting in the list by using the hardware UP and DOWN buttons, or, with dial jog/rocker, if the device has one.

Whenever that happens, the painting is automatically saved (see below).

Painting and saving changes

The pictures in Kid Paint come from the currently installed picture file. As of version 1.5 of the program, this file is always read only and is never modified by the program.

On the other hand, the program remembers the modifications over the last 5 edited images. These are stored in separate data file, which is always placed in the RAM memory. The limit is imposed due to the amount of memory it takes to store a single user painting at real time (that is, without compression). Future program versions may relax this limitation.

Exporting images with Kid Paint Desktop

Since version 1.1 of Kid Paint there is a simple add-on desktop application allowing export to BMP format for the most recent picture editions on the handheld. Kid Paint Desktop may or may not be included with your download of Kid Paint, so you may want to check on www.beiks.com for it.

Protecting other applications

Kid Paint has a built-in protection, which prevents the kid from accidentally leaving the program and possibly damaging the data in other programs. This is done by blocking all hardware and soft keys.

The right way to exit the program is to invoke the EXIT command from the application menu. Since this can also be done by a minor, it is also possible to assign a password through the application's preferences.

Note this functionality is generalized and further enhanced in our Kid Zone secure application launcher; however, Kid Paint does not need KZ.
