ToonKit FAQ

Can I put ToonKit on more than one of my website's pages?

Yes. You can put ToonKit on as many pages as you want.

Can I put more than one ToonKit on any one page?

No. You can only install one ToonKit per page. Trying to put two or more ToonKits on any single page will disable the application. You can however put any number of ToonKit applications throughout your website - as long as there is only one per page.

Can I run ToonKit offline?

Yes, you can run ToonKit offline. However, some functionalities will be diminished. You will not, for example, be able to send a ToonKard.

How can I save my work?

The easiest way to save your work is simply to send a ToonKard to yourself containing the face you want to save! Your work can also be saved by using any screen capture application. To enable ease of use, the ToonKit application outputs your finished work in a new window. This enables you to copy the complete contents of the window (by highlighting the window and pressing a designated hotkey) as opposed to having to first outline your work.

What is a screen capture application?

A screen capture application is a program which takes a photograph of your monitor's screen or a predefined section of the screen. This can be a stand alone application such as or part of a graphics application such as Paint Shop Pro, Corel Draw, or Adobe Photoshop. Please consult the approprate vendors documentation to find out how to use it.

I can't seem to be able to use ToonKit with my browser. Do I need a plug-in?

No, ToonKit does not require the downloading or use of a plug-in. However, you must have a browser which supports the Dynamic HTML programming language. These are generally refered to as 'version 4 browsers'. You can use the appropriate links in the ToonKit website to download the version 4 browser of your choice. Note: You do not need a version 4 browser to receive a ToonKard.

Why do I need a version 4 browser to use ToonKit?

You need a version 4 browser because ToonKit utilises Dynamic HTML (DHTML). DHTML is a common programming standard that has been approved by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Note: You do not need a version 4 browser to receive a ToonKard.

What is Dynamic HTML (DHTML)?

DHTML is a open, standards language, which allows programmers to introduce dynamic effects on the client side with fewer burdens on the Web server. It enables the modification of styles, the change and repositioning of content, the display of multimedia effects, and the manipulation of data on Web pages. DHTML has been approved by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

I'm a PC user running Windows 3.1. Can I use ToonKit?

Yes, you can use ToonKit once you have one of the version 4 browsers currently available for the Windows 3.1 operating system. Note: You do not need a version 4 browser to receive a ToonKard.

I've put ToonKit on my website. Is there anyway I configure the application so that it displays a characture of my design by default?

Yes, you can personalise your ToonKit. It's as easy as cut and paste. Please click here for instructions on how to do this.

Can I make changes to the ToonKit software or graphics, etc?

You cannot make any changes to ToonKit - such as the application's code, the contained graphical components, etc. However, if you would like to see some graphical components of your own design why don't you make them up and send them to us (please check our Graphical Component Submission Guidelines before you begin). We would be delighted to see them and even more so to include them in the next version of ToonKit! Designers of accepted components receive a ToonKit T-Shirt and recognition. Please note that, for legal reasons, any submmited work becomes the sole property of the Creators of ToonKit.

I'd like to design some new components for ToonKit. How do I go about doing it?

First of all check the page entitled Graphical Component Submission Guidelines. Before you begin, ensure that your work will be in the right format and will be compatable with the ToonKit application. Also be certain that your work doesn't infringe on any copyrights. When you've finished, submit the components to submit@ToonKit.com. We'd love to see your work and so would thousands of other ToonKit users!!! The designers of any work accepted will recieve a special ToonKit T-shirt and recognition on the ToonKit website. Please note that, for legal reasons, any submitted work becomes the sole property of the Creators of ToonKit.

The person I want to send my ToonKit face to doesn't have a version 4 browser. Will he/she still get my ToonKard?

You don't need a version 4 browser to receive a ToonKard as the ToonKard is automatically generated as an image - a GIF file, which is sent as an attachment.

What if I want to send a message which is larger than can be contained within the ToonKard bubble?

In cases where the message is quite long we suggest that you simply capture the ToonKard image (along with the speech bubble and the text it contains) as a GIF or JPEG using a screen capture application - or by sending it as a ToonKard to yourself! You can then send the corresponding file as an attachment, allowing you to send as large a message as you want. This works very well in the case of Web mail applications (e.g. Hotmail) or Browser-based email systems (e.g. Outlook Express) as the image is automatically displayed along with the text.
