StarSuite[tm] 8 Office Suite

This file contains important information about this program. Please read this information very carefully before you begin.

You can find the latest information on the web at http://www.sun.com/staroffice.

Note: If you want to upgrade from an evaluation version to a full version of StarSuite, see the "Upgrading an Evaluation Version to a Full Version" section of this document.

Notes on Installation

System Requirements

The UNIX versions of StarSuite cannot be installed on a (V)FAT partition, since FAT file systems do not support the creation of symbolic links. The path for the StarSuite installation directory must not contain a space.

If you use Debian linux, you need to use the "alien" command to install StarSuite:

  1. Change to the directory that contains the rpm packages for StarSuite.
  2. Type the following command: sudo alien -i -k *.i586.rpm
Note: This process might take a few minutes to complete.

Installing StarSuite 8 on a Linux File Server

If you install StarSuite on a Linux file server, you need to perform the following steps to install the StarSuite menu integration package on a client.

Note: You need the RPM package manager to install this package.

  1. On the client, open a terminal, and become root.
  2. Type "rpm -ivh staroffice-Linux_distribution_name-menus-8.0.0-xx.noarch.rpm". You can find the menu integration package for your Linux distribution in the rpm directory of the StarSuite installation directory.
  3. Modify the staroffice8 symbolic link in the /etc directory so that the link points to the StarSuite installation on the file server. For example, if you mount the file server as /mnt/nfs, type "ln -sf/mnt/nfs/staroffice8 staroffice8".

Difficulties starting StarSuite (for example, applications hang) as well as problems with the screen display are often caused by the graphics card driver. If these problems occur, please update your graphics card driver or try using the graphics driver delivered with your operating system. Difficulties displaying 3D objects can often be solved by deactivating the option "Use OpenGL" in 'Tools - Options - StarSuite - View - 3D view'.

You can install StarSuite 8 along side of an older version of StarSuite. If you later choose to remove the older version of StarSuite, you must call the installation program of the newer version and choose 'Repair'. This ensures that the new version is correctly registered in your system.
Please note that copy and paste via clipboard between StarSuite 6.0 and StarSuite 8 might not work in StarSuite format. If that happens, choose 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose a format other than StarSuite, or open the document in StarSuite 8 directly.

Please make sure you have enough free memory in the temporary directory on your system and that read, write and run access rights have been granted. Close all other programs before starting the installation.

Updating an Existing Adabas Database to Adabas D 13

Before you install the Adabas D 13 database application, you need to remove older versions of Adabas D from your operating system. To remove an older Adabas D application, use the corresponding StarSuite setup application. Do not delete the database files.

Upgrading an Evaluation Version to a Full Version

  1. In any StarSuite application, choose Help – Purchase StarSuite. Note: To purchase a license key for StarSuite, you need an Internet connection.
  2. If you already purchased your license key, click Next.
  3. If you need to purchase a license key, click Get serial number, follow the instructions on the web site, and then click Next.
  4. Enter the license key in the box and then click Next.
  5. Click Finish.

Server-Based Configuration and Limited Java Functionality

When the StarSuite configuration is stored on an LDAP server and managed remotely via the StarSuite Configuration Manager, the Java Environment is not correctly initialized on program startup, and some Java related features of StarSuite do not work:

Problems During Program Startup on Gnome

If you experience StarSuite startup problems (most notably while using Gnome) please 'unset' the SESSION_MANAGER environment variable inside the shell you use to start StarSuite. This can be done by adding the line "unset SESSION_MANAGER" to the beginning of the soffice shell script found in the "[office folder]/program" directory.

Important Information for Arabic and Hebrew Versions

If the user interface of the Arabic or Hebrew versions shows blanks or squares instead of text, please install the most recent Java Runtime Environment (JRE 1.5) before running the StarSuite Installation Program. The JRE will install the fonts required for Arabic and Hebrew versions.

Important Information for Asian Versions

Thai Input-Sequence Checking

In a “th_TH” locale, the Thai XIM will carry out the input sequence check. That means that StarSuite is not able to normalize and auto-correct the Thai input sequences.

Please change the following lines in your user environment settings before running the application.

XMODIFIERS="@im=BasicCheck” or XMODIFIERS="@im=Strict”

to (or add the following lines if they do not exist at all)

XMODIFIERS="@im=none"
export
XMODIFIERS

Important Accessibility Notes

Due to a problem within the Java(TM) Runtime Environment (JRE), you have to set the operating system locale (language) to "English (United States)" or "(EN-us)". Only this setting enables you to work with programs like ZoomText. However, this problem no longer exists in Java versions 1.5. (Note: The program WindowEyes does not work with StarSuite, because it does not support the Java Accessibility API.)

For more information on the accessibility features in StarSuite, see http://www.sun.com/staroffice/accessibility.

Shortcut Keys

Only shortcut keys (key combinations) not used by the operating system can be used in StarSuite. If a key combination in StarSuite does not work as described in the StarSuite Help, check if that shortcut is already used by the operating system. To rectify such conflicts, you can change the keys assigned by your operating system. Alternatively, you can change almost any key assignment in StarSuite. For more information on this topic, refer to the StarSuite Help or the Help documention of your operating system.

File System ReiserFS: StarSuite Will Not Start for User IDs Larger Than 65535

In versions lower than 3.6, the file system ReiserFS causes a problem as soon as the user ID is larger than 65535. The problem is that files temporarily saved by StarSuite can no longer be removed by the program itself, but rather only by the system administrator (for example, /tmp/OSL_PIPE_xxx ). The result is that StarSuite cannot be started. The problem is in the ReiserFS file system and has been fixed in version 3.6 and higher.

File Locking

File locking is enabled by default in StarSuite. On a network that uses the Network File System protocol (NFS), the locking daemon for NFS clients must be active. To disable file locking, edit the soffice script and set the environment variable for file locking to zero, that is, SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=0. If you disable file locking, the write access of a document is not restricted to the user who first opens the document.

Using Info-ZIP

StarSuite uses Info-ZIP to create and unpack the StarSuite installation, as well as for packing and unpacking the StarSuite XML file format. Info-ZIP programs (ZIP, UnZip and other utilities) are available free of charge and can be used in the source code and as an executable program. They can be attained by visiting Anonymous FTP sites such as ftp.uu.net:/pub/archiving/zip/*.
