What Is AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape?

AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape is a version of AOL's Instant Messenger software that has been integrated for use with the Netscape browser. It is completely compatible with all other versions of AIM, and it is an easy way to communicate instantly with your friends who are online. You can:

Setting Up

Netscape allows a single screen name to be used for many Netscape properties, including AIM. If you completed the registration process when you started Netscape, you have already created a screen name and password. You don't need to do any further setup. Simply choose Instant Messenger from the Window menu or click the Buddy List tab in My Sidebar. Your screen name is pre-entered. All you need to do is to enter the password you used in registration and the product is ready to use.

If you have not registered, use the following procedure:

  1. Open the Window menu and click Instant Messenger.
  2. Click Setup.
  3. Click "I don't have a screen name. I need to register a new one," and then click Next.
  4. In the screen that appears, enter your name, which is the name of the profile with which you logged onto Netscape.
  5. Enter your desired screen name and password, and then click Next.
  6. In the screen that appears, enter your email address, birth date, gender, and Zip or Postal Code, and then click Next.
  7. In the screen that appears, read the Netscape Privacy Policy, and then click "I agree" or "I disagree," and then click Next.
  8. In the screen that appears you'll see if your screen name is available. If it is already taken, you are offered a chance either to try again or to accept one of a list of suggested screen names that are as close to the one you've chosen as possible. Click Finish if your screen name has been accepted or enter a new screen name or choose one of the suggested options, and then click Finish.

Note: If you click "I disagree," you won't be able to complete the registration process.

Soon after the registration process has been completed, you'll receive an email confirmation. All you need to do is click Reply and type OK in the compose area. You will receive a second email detailing all of the uses of your screen name.

If you want to use more than one screen name, see Registering New Screen Names.

  1. If you're connected to AIM, sign off.
  2. Click Register New Screen Name.
  3. Complete the process by following the same procedure detailed in Setting Up, starting with step 3.

Launching AOL Instant Messenger at System Startup

AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape is set to launch at system startup. If this is not your choice, you can turn off the option using the following procedure:

  1. Open the Edit menu and choose Preferences.

Note: This option may or may not be available depending on the platform you're using. This option won't be available if you have either another version of AOL Instant Messenger or the standalone ICQ client set up to start at system launch.

Warnings

If someone else using the Instant Messenger service sends you annoying or offensive messages, you have two ways to respond. You can issue a warning to the person or you can block the person.

In this section:

Warning a User

Viewing Someone's Warning Level

Warning a User

To warn a user who has sent you an offensive message, click Warn in the Instant Message window in which you received the message.

Warn imposes a warning on the sender, hampering that person's ability to send and receive messages. With frequent warnings, the user will not be able to exchange any messages with anyone. Only after a “cooling off” period can that user send and receive messages again.

When you click Warn, you can choose to impose the warning anonymously. Anonymous warnings are less severe and the user you are warning won't know who issued the warning.

Regarding warnings you send and receive:

Alternatively, you can block one or more people from sending you messages. See "Blocking a User" for more information.

To set up your Buddy Icon preferences as a sender, do the following:

  1. Choose a Buddy Icon from one of the categories displayed in the preferences panel.
  2. Alternatively, browse your hard drive to find an image you want to use.

The image you choose can be any of the following types: .gif, .jpg, .bmp, .ico, or .xbm. The image can be a maximum size of 7,168 bytes. Whether you choose one of the ready-made images or opt for one of your own, it will be scaled to fit in the small rectangle in the upper-left section of the panel. When you send an instant message, the icon will appear on the lower left of the message window.

To set a Buddy Icon for someone on your Buddy List, do the following:

  1. Select the name of the buddy for whom you want to set a Buddy Icon.
  2. Choose a Buddy Icon from one of the categories displayed in the preferences panel.

Note: The Buddy Icon you assign overrides any Buddy Icon the buddy may have set. When you recieve messages from that buddy, you will see the Buddy Icon you've assigned. Any Buddy Icon the buddy has assigned will not be visible.

To set up your Buddy Icon preferences as a recipient, do the following:

If you click Display Knock-Knock Dialog, you'll see a dialog box everytime a buddy sends you a message with a Buddy Icon, and you can choose to accept or reject the icon on a case-by-case basis.

Note: Rejecting Buddy Icons has nothing to do with blocking users. Even if you reject all Buddy Icons, you can still receive instant messages from all unblocked buddies. You'll just view them without the icons.

Server Host

You can obtain the IP address from your network administrator.

Server Port

This field contains the default server port number to be used on the Netscape integrated instant messaging server. Under normal circumstances, you do not need to change this field.

Connect using proxy

If you click this button, the Instant Messenger software activates the proxy server controls. Enter the information below after obtaining it from your network administrator.
