REQUEST FOR BETA TESTERS

In June 1998, J&J Computer Consulting requested beta testers for an upcoming product called j-Shepherd. Due to several unforseen issues, the test had to be delayed. While a beta version was built and ready for testing, we were not sufficiently happy with its quality or functionality. Consequently, we went back to work making the product better. After three major design changes, the first j-Shepherd (renamed Shepherd) beta is now available on J&J's Web Site.

Shepherd is an object-oriented server framework that takes advantage of the common components of Internet servers to reduce size and increase speed, flexibility, and scalability. The first beta-release will focus on testing the server engine and the configuration and administration systems. An implementation of J&J's j-Chat protocol, Shepherd.Chat, has been developed for testing these systems, but the test will expand to other protocols as soon as possible.

Features available in the beta-release will include:

While you may not be interested in implementing a chat system, the Shepherd.Chat Service will help identify possible problems in the server engine. It is also a fairly simple protocol and will help eliminate the possibility of problems in the Service implementation.

Potential beta testers should have OS/2 Warp 3.0 or better with tcp/ip installed and at least a 486 or better processor. The early betas will not be for the timid as there is no install program and all SDS administration is done through a command line interface.

For further information or to apply for the beta, go to:

There's an Apache for OS/2 Maintenance Page created at Russian Underground/2 web site.

http://merlin.itep.ru/technology/apache/

Server support team is going to share the experience of building and using Apache for OS/2. We always had the latest apache built for OS/2 for the last several months. Not the basic version which can be found at the original apache support site, but a special build with PHP and JServ modules, charset support (i18n problem is one of the major problems for webmasters in Russia :) and other useful additions, properly set up and tested.

I have updated this web page with important information on the future of the Win32-OS/2 project.

The Win32-OS/2 Project is software that allows an end user to run Win95/98/NT (a.k.a. Win32) programs on OS/2 Warp, as if they were 100% native OS/2 applications, without needing Windows or Win-OS/2.

Hello,

Please find the Beta 2.09e of PC/2 - Program Commander/2 at my site:

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/7885/

For those not knowing what is PC/2?

PC/2 is a WPS enhancement/replacement that allows you to manage your applications and Desktop more easily. From a configurable Popup Menu you can not only launch programs, but also specify details like their size&position on a Virtual Desktop, the Hotkey used to switch to or start them, their Priority, their Environent (or DOS Settings for DOS applications) or when they should be invoked by a Scheduler.

For running applications, PC/2 gives you more control by allowing manipulation of (moveable or sticky) windows on the Virtual Desktop with an optional Overview window, usage of the WIN95 keys, support of (timer based) X-Windows style Sliding Focus and Dynamic Menuselection, HW-Panning support for your ThinkPad users, a QuickSwitch and SessionBar window to quickly switch between applications (besides displaying or managing the APM and CPU (including SMP) status), enhanced window manipulation by using mouse buttons 2 and 3, Advanced Marking of command processors, E and EPM editors, Netscape, Lotus Notes and many IBM communication products like CM/2 and PersComm/3270, an enhanced OS/2 Shutdown including Reboot or APM Poweroff, Titlebar Smarticons adding functions like Rollup or Help, Security features to protect unwanted modifications to PC/2, Environment Spaces to get rid of the CONFIG.SYS mess, and a Online Automatic Update feature to allow PC/2 automatically inform you and download news/enhancements/fixes.

This and much more to enhance the usability of OS/2 is waiting for your testing!

For comments/problem reports/... (not only regarding the Beta), please feel free to contact me at Roman_Stangl@at.ibm.com and please take a stop at my homepage (where you can also find some other goodies, including the source code)!

The 17 February 1999 issue of Focus on OS/2 is now online. Approximately 10 links and several news items have been added.

In addition The Mining Company itself has undergone an exciting new facelift to give it a more modern appearance and make it easier to navigate between similar sites or topics.

The OS/2 topic for this week is a revised and updated edition of a previous article describing how to install RealPlayer 5.0 into OS/2 Warp 4. If you've been having trouble installing RP for Netscape 4.04, this article should have answers for you.

Perfect Niche Software, Inc., would like to announce the update of their SMACK! for OS/2 homepage. The new layout is easily navigated and information is readily available.

SMACK! is the world's first native labeling program exclusively for OS/2 Warp 3 or OS/2 Warp 4.

SMACK! lets you print labels on any printer supported by OS/2, and supports almost every predefined label format. It lets you use varying fonts, color, and graphics on your labels, and control of the object placement with precision. It even supports an infinite "Undo, for those that want to experiment until you get the labels exactly the way YOU want them.

SMACK! is a powerful graphical program to help you design and create mailing labels, videotape labels, envelopes and much more. It is fully Workplace Shell aware and takes advantage of OS/2's many benefits, from drag-and-drop to multithreading. The application uses templates, and REXX is its native macro language.

One of SMACK!'s many strengths is its extensibility, the degree to which you can extend and customize its features. You'll be incorporating your existing applications to improve connectivity for your office or home in no time.

SMACK! is currently at version 1.02. According to master programmer, Bill Schindler, SMACK! v. 2.0 is due to be released in the second quarter of 1999.

You'll be amazed at the number of new features and more are being added daily!

Here's just a few:

Oh no, I'm not going to list them all here. We want you to come and see our "new look" and browse the SMACK! pages for full details at http://www.perfectniche.com. Just select SMACK! from the menu and you're on your way!!!

The EverBlue project is something I just recently came across, and I don't recall hearing about it before. So, here it is:

http://members.xoom.com/Virusface/

The EverBlue project seems to be an undertaking to port Xlib to PM. Which would mean that the vast variety of Linux (and other *nix) software that is designed to work under Xwindows will be able to work under native OS/2 PM by simply recompiling using the EverBlue libraries. Why this could mean that OS/2 users will have a vast array of accessable software, without the need to install and configure XFree86/2.

Visit their Webpage for more information. (I also believe that they need some help with coding/testing etc...)

A beta version of the text-editor Kon is available on:

http://www.bmtmicro.com/kon

The version is 1.14 rev. 1074 BETA.

What is new in this version is mainly better printer support. Kon can now print syntax highlighting, use different fonts, print two-column pages and also print only odd or only even pages to allow double sided printing on a single-sided printer.

I would be happy for some feedback on the new printer support, and also some information about how it works with different printers. (Mainly color printout).

Kon is shareware and the registration fee is US$20. To download and for more information, point your browser to:

I have uploaded version 1.21 of the YADTV/2 application to hobbes.nmsu.edu. The file can be found at:

http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/incoming/yadtv121.zip and at some point will migrate to http:/hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/apps/mmedia/yadtv121.zip

This version has a number of changes to the program including:

"Mute" control for sound
"Video Off" control for the video display
"MCI" button to display the device information

There is a work around for the "Invalid Connector" message that was occuring for some people.
