After 18 months, I finally updated my OS/2 programming links page on EDM/2. The URL has also changed, although the old URL will continue to work. The new URL is:

http://www.edm2.com/links/

This page contains an organized collection of OS/2 programming resources on the WWW. In this update, I've made only minor changes, mostly link clean-ups. I have still have a huge list of updates that will make their way to the page in the coming weeks.

Registration covers all 1.xx releases of DH-Grep-PM. If you have registered DH-Grep-PM *prior* to Febuary of 1999 and have not received an email notice of this update, I need to update your email address in my mailing list. Send me a message with the email address used with your original registration and your new email address and I will update my mailing list.

Description of DH-Grep-PM:

This PM version of grep is designed as a user friendly application. The often cryptic command line options have been replaced with easy to use menu selections. The output of the search is sent to a PM window and the user has easy access to all of the information that was found by the program. To reduce the overhead, the results are buffered until the search is completed and then displayed in the PM window.

New in DH-Grep-PM Version 1.06

Fixed bug that prevented the font selection made from the menu from being saved as the new default font.

Added support for saving drag & drop color and font changes made to the information area below the main window. This should make DH-Grep-PM easier to use for OS/2 users with vision problems.

Some time ago I begun porting SpeakFreely (a Internet Voice chat package) from Unix to OS/2. Now I've got some result, I can build almost everything, it just lacks the needed sound-card interface (I built compression, communication, and internet tools for it). Unfortunately I don't know the OS/2 mmedia subsystem and I don't have the time to learn it now. So I'm releasing my work (the partial port) in the hope someone will give it a look and complete the port. (I would be very happy :)

You can find the package/build instructions on my homepage (http://www.quasarbbs.com/Virusface -> english -> projects section).

Alternatively you can get the sources from OS/2 Netlabs (www.netlabs.org).

To download from netlabs go to :

ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/incoming

(Maybe a SpeekFrealy/2 page will be added to Netlabs)

JUCS (Java Update Control System) was written entirely under OS/2, even though it is Java, so it has been tested the most under OS/2, and OS/2ers should appreciate the "OS/2 feel" it has. It works GREAT under OS/2 Java 1.1.7

JUCS allows you to easily update your released products using special "patching" techniques. Your products will be able to automatically keep themselves at the latest version, and you can publish your product's patches via FTP/WEB or JUCS' Built in Patch Server. JUCS also allows you to create single Install.class files to deploy your products with. Free, non-crippled, evaluation version available!

Registration covers all 1.xx releases of PMStripper. If you have registered PMStripper prior to Febuary of 1999 and have not received an email notice of this update, I need to update your email address in my mailing list. Send me a message with the email address used with your original registration and your new email address and I will update my mailing list.

Discription of PMStripper:

This PM utility strips HTML codes from Web pages, leaving only the text and optionally the URLs. While the layout of tables and lists is lost during stripping, data is sorted to separate lines for legibility.

Install PMStripper as the HTML source viewer in WebX instead of the OS/2 system editor E, and you can use the Ctrl+V keystroke combination to load the web page source directectly into PMStripper. This will make it easier to cut and paste information or URLs from web pages. It can also be installed as the document source viewer in Netscape. There are instructions for using PMStripper with Netscape 4.04 on my web page and included in the shareware distribution zip file.

Registered users of PMStripper will have access to two additional executable files that were compiled with the 486 and 586 compiler options. These versions will offer some performance improvement for users with 468 , Pentium, or equivalent CPUs.

New in PMStripper 1.21:

Fixed bug that prevented the font selection made from the menu from being saved as the new default font.

Added support for saving drag and drop color and font changes made to the information area below the main window. This should make PMStripper easier to use for OS/2 users with vision problems.

Added a "Save Marked Text To File" option under "File" on the menubar.

As of today - http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/fixnews.html#fp10

Fixpak 10 for OS/2 Warp 4

On February 26, 1999 IBM OS/2 Fix Distribution released FixPak 10.

Diskette images can be found at ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/fixes/v4warp/

Select the country you are interested in then the Fixpak 10 (XR?M010) entry. If there is none then Fixpak 10 is not available for that Country.

Software Updates enabled versions (RSU) can be found at http://ps.boulder.ibm.com/pbin-usa-ps/getobj.pl?/pdocs-usa/softupd.html

Also from Duane Chamblee the following:

In case you haven't heard. Fixpak10 is out...

I just installed it and had a few problems....

1. IMPORTANT!
If you have ESS Audio, download the latest ESS package from the DD Pak and update the ESxxxxDD.SYS driver BEFORE installing the fixpak. Otherwise the machine will trap at boot!

2. After the two reboots the "REIPL=ON" at the end of CONFIG.SYS did not get removed, so the machine kept rebooting! An ALT+F1 command line boot will allow you to remove this line using TEDIT.

Let me know if you do or don't have the same problems.

On Hobbes I finally found what makes me consider my last year's decision to buy a VIA MVP3 base socket-7 motherboard a lot less problematic than I thought until now. The file is called danis506.zip and contains a busmaster IDE driver for recent VIA chipsets. By the way, it's neither been done by IBM nor by VIA - the author, Daniela Engert, says in the readme she was discontent with her system's performance, and since IBM does not support it and the VIA efforts were too buggy she decided to write her own driver. It works well in my Tyan Trinity 100AT based machine and boosts SysBench performance of my Seagate 9 GB disk from 6.4/6.4 MB/s cache/transfer to 21/11 MB respectively.

We have very good news for all of our users on two different topics. First, we have reached verbal agreement with CheckFree Corporation such that CheckFree suport of InCharge will continue for the foreseeable future. We are now working out the details for a modified contract. It appears our suit against CheckFree will not have to go to court.

Second we are very happy to announce immediate availablity of a whole new Internet home for InCharge. This new home will provide an enhanced www web site with all of the problems of the current site resolved, a fully integrated FTP site for file downloads, and a new e-mail address for customer support. We have made this major investment to show our continued support for the OS/2 market and the new Win95/98/NT market. The details are as follows:

NEW WEB SITE: Our new web site URL is "http://www.spitfiresoftware.com". The advantages of the new site are:

  1. You can download new versions of InCharge as either a single file or as a set of files.
  2. There is no "time limit" on downloades that forces an abort if the download time exceeds 30 minutes.
  3. Over the next few months we will be making major enhancements to the site for ease of use, visual attractiveness, and secure ordering.
  4. The current site will be maitained as a backup site until it is no longer required.

NEW FTP SITE: We now have our own FTP site where all versions of InCharge can be quickly and easily downloaded using an FTP program. The details are:

  1. The site address is ftp.spitfiresoftware.com.
  2. Sign on with an id of "anonymous" and your e-mail address as the password.
  3. The latest files are in the directory "pub" and can be downloaded from there. The system has restart capability for downloads that are interrupted.
  4. If you need to send us a file, it can be uploaded directly to the "incoming" directory rather than attaching it to an e-mail.
  5. The files on the InCharge FTP site will be updated at exactly the same time as our web site files (in fact they are the same files) so that the release of new versions will be available immediately from either the web site or the ftp site.

NEW SPITFIRE E-MAILL ADDRESS: Our new address is customer-care@spitfiresoftware.com. The old address is, and will remain valid.

MORE GOOD NEWS: On March 1st, a major new web retail site will be launched focusing on 32 bit platforms and software. We will be involved and over time you will be able to oder not only new InCharge packages there, but also upgrades, electronic subscription services, and new updated printed manuals. We will have more information on this on March 1st.

Industrial Services Selects Solution Technology Y2K Imaging System

Boca Raton, Florida Solution Technology, Inc. (STi) has been awarded a contract by the Industrial Services of Mobile (Industrial) to implement a fully Year 2000 compliant OS/2 based imaging system.

Solution Technology will be delivering the award winning Image Edition for OS/2 to be hosted on a single processor OS/2 Warp Server. OS/2 Warp clients will be on user workstations. STi's solution will preserve Industrial's existing investment in hardware to be installed in Q1 1999. Image Edition supports high speed scanning with their Fujitsu and EPSON scanners through STi's TWAIN for OS/2 drivers. Additionally, Image Edition is being enhanced to permit hosting Image Edition's optical indexing databases on IBM's DB2 Universal Database (UDB). This will permit Industrial Services to directly access imaging information from other applications.

"The implementation of Image Edition will enable us to maintain our stable OS/2 Warp Server and client environment while at the same time give us imaging and document management capabilities. The Image Edition product will give us the capability to manage and easily retrieve tens of thousands of documents from both our main office and remote field locations. This will ultimately save time while providing critical information to our remote locations faster, particularly when compared to our existing manual system of storage and paper distribution.", said David Scroggins, Secretary/Treasurer of Industrial Systems.

"We worked closely with Industrial Services to preserve their existing hardware investments and to provide a complete OS/2 and Y2K compliant solution within the time frame they requested." said Kent Swan, President of Solution Technology.

Solution Technology, Inc. is a leading supplier of components for image analysis, data-entry and document management applications. Other barcode, forms reading, image data-entry, and departmental document management products for OS/2 and NT are available for use in the transportation, banking, distribution, and insurance industries among others. Product and pricing information can be requested by calling (561) 241-3210 or by visiting STi's web site at http://www.stiscan.com.

TWAIN for OS/2 is a servicemark of Solution Technology, Inc. Image Edition is a trademark of Ovation Data Services. OS/2, Warp, and DB2 are trademarks of IBM Corporation. Other marks are owned by their respective companies.

Feb 15, 1999 -- MaxBase v2 has been released to the public.

Effe-Elle System s.r.l. announces the general availability of MaxBase v2, the new release of the lightweight Java database product whose first version was rated as "Cool" technology by Gamelan and "Top 5%" by JARS.

The MaxBase package contains several Java applications for creation, population, administration of local and remote database tables in a proprietary format (conversion utilities for DB III, CSV, QIF files are provided), design and printing of reports and forms, creation of HTML tables for use in web pages; on top of these, classes and Beans for Java and NetRexx developers are provided in the package. The product, tested internally on Linux, OS/2 and Windows 95/98/NT but running also on other platforms is specifically aimed at users, consultants and developers that need an easy, affordable and lightweight solution for everyday database tasks; Effe-Elle System, an european software firm, uses the product to build its own vertical software and this ensures that the product is both improving and battle-proven for the tasks it was created for.

Following the trend set by similar products, MaxBase is distributed exclusively on the internet on the main MaxBase web page, http://www.flsystem.it/eng/Software/MaxBase/MaxBase.html and the extended edition can be purchased with a secure transaction on the web; the standard edition of the product, however, is downloadable for free at the above URL and provides the same set of features as the extended edition, but is limited in the number of the connections a MaxBase server can accept at once (two) and cannot be re-sold or used to build commercial products.

Effe-Elle System s.r.l. would like to invite everyone interested in such a product to stop by their web site, try out and use the package, available in several formats (including a self-installing Win32 exe file).

The MaxBase project appeared for the first time some three years ago, developed as a shareware by Massimiliano Marsiglietti, when Java was still in its infancy and has gone through several important upgrades as the Java platform itself improved. Mr.Marsiglietti has now joined Effe-Elle System s.r.l. and the development of the product continues in the new corporate environment with the same enthusiasm as before.

Effe-Elle System s.r.l., founded in 1993, is a European software firm (the main offices are at Casalgrande, RE, Italy) that also provides other computer-related services such as network and hardware consulting.

The SECOND 1999 Release of ThermoProtect! :)

Now ThermoProtect V1.17 is available on http://hobbes.mnsu.edu/pub/incoming/tp-117.zip

and later it will be moved to http://hobbes.nmsu.edu/pub/os2/util/mboard/tp-117.zip

Freeware now and forever! :)

New Version Highlight :

This is a fairly massive update and bug fix, so please bear with me... :)

Since ThermoProtect is built with easy to upgrade code, I've decided to add support for additional hardware to the program first, instead of making the GUI version. And fear not, all the work done here will be translated to an even better GUI version... <VBG>

*This version adds the ability to output to file, this feature does not allow custom file name at this time.

*Well, now ThermoProtect is the FIRST (AFAIK) enviromental monitor that FULLY SUPPORTS Winbond W83782D's output feature! Other program might be compatible with it, but they do not exploit the extra feature that it provides! Yeah, one more thing to brag about... <GR&D> ThermoProtect can now provide you with information about information on your system's CMOS battery, helping you to identify mysterious CMOS setting loss.

*False ThermoAlarm rejection added, Winbond's chip may sometimes gives you 0 RPM for fan speed, this problem with the hardware has been fixed by ThermoProtect's internal false alarm rejection system. I'm surprised no one had mentioned about this problem but it seems that some chips would give a fluke value once in a while (seems like I'm reading the chip while it is updating the variables.).

@Now using CmdLin3 command line parameter processor, joint effort between Jim Walsh, Kevin McCoy and ME! :) And numerous bugfix related to the newer CmdLin3's value extraction problems.

!Chip detection bug fixed, now it should be able to accurately identify all known chips.

!ThermoAlarm might indicate some inputs are protected even when they are NOT PROTECTED. This bug has been corrected.

!The command line input for Fan #3's ThermoAlarm feature is now corrected. Now incorrect command line input to ThermoAlarm will be detected properly.

!ThermoProtect may not write the proper value into the lowest fan speed variable when it drops to zero or non existent. Now fixed.

REQUESTS!

If anyone knows what's going on with Gigabyte 6BXE's weird negative voltage reading (-12V shows up as -2.xxxV, and -5V shows up as -1.xxxV... very weird...), please let me know...

Error/Bug Reports:

If this program says that it can't identify the chip... please do the following...

*MAKE SURE you do have a enviromental monitoring chip of some kind.

*Check if the output from ThermoProtect is making sense or not (ie +5V entry showing +8V is NOT making sense... :) )...

*Check your motherboard manual and record the model and the make of the monitoring chip.

*E-Mail me the data... :)

Greetings. The new Epson Omni printer drivers available on the OS2DDPak On-Line are *definitely* worth the download. The job properties box looks like a cross between the familiar IBM OMNI driver and the current Windows Epson drivers. Photo output is now excellent, and much faster than the drivers from Epson Germany (I tested them with PMView 1.02).

Based on their graphics performance their text speed should still be way ahead of the German drivers too. Looks like these may have been sourced from Epson USA if I have interpreted what I saw on the DDPak web page correctly. Well Done!

Javaworld magazine evaluated Java VM performance and scalability. It turns out that... IBM's OS/2 Java VM running over OS/2 Warp Server for e-Business ('Aurora') tops the speed tests!. It is faster than IBM's own Java VM for NT, faster than Microsoft's Java VM, and faster than Redhat Linux!. It didnt get as high as solaris on the scalability test but due to an acknowledged bug in the Aurora uniprocessor kernel (which IBM says will be fixed).

A couple quotes:

Is it fast?
Each time I run a set of VolanoMark tests against the latest batch of Java virtual machines I find some surprises, and this time is no exception. IBM now dominates VolanoMark performance, whether on Windows NT 4.0 or on its new OS/2 Warp Server for e-business. IBM's Java virtual machine for Windows NT is a remarkable 20 percent faster than the alternatives from Microsoft and Sun. On OS/2 Warp Server it even beats Tower Technology's TowerJ static compiler, showing that it is possible for normal Java virtual machines to surpass native performance, even if that's not yet happening on the same operating system.

See for yourself the amazing results and charts at:

A new beta version of the text-editor Kon is available on:

http://www.bmtmicro.com/kon

The version is 1.14 rev. 1075 BETA.

The new beta fixes a problem where Kon tried to save unexisting printer information to the INI-file, in some cases creating a very large INI-file.

Info-text taken from last beta:

What is new in this version is mainly better printer support. Kon can now print syntax highlighting, use different fonts, print two-column pages and also print only odd or only even pages to allow double sided printing on a single-sided printer.

I would be happy for some feedback on the new printer support, and also some information about how it works with different printers. (Mainly color printout).

Kon is shareware and the registration fee is US$20. To download and for more information, point your browser to:

Windows NT webmasters tired of the endless flow of security bugs and exploits, or the direction MS is taking with NT 5.0 can now migrate to OS/2 :) and continue running their web server's ASP scripts under Apache for OS/2 or any other OS/2 web server.

'ASP anywhere' is what Halcyon promises in its announcement for "Instant ASP", a Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP) compatible framework that runs almost anywhere: OS/2, Novell, Sun, Linux, MacOS, HPUX, SGI, SCO, DEC, RS/6000, AS/400, S/390, and Windows.

"Instant ASP" supports all leading web servers such as Apache, Zeus, Netscape FastTrack/Enterprise Server, Sun WebServer, IIS, IBM WebSphere, Lotus Domino, and many others.

Interested OS/2 users can participate in the pre-release program by signing up from the following URL:

http://halcyonsoft.com/asp/beta.htm

So, if you run a web server in os/2, join the beta!.

With the addition of more than a dozen new XFree86-OS/2 programs and utilities, the OS/2 Alternative has passed the 1,200 mark of current, native OS/2 applications.

http://www.tstonramp.com/~freiheit/os2apps.shtml

As always, this fast-growing and free OS/2 resource continues to rely on the assistance of OS/2 users and developers. Bad links require correct URLs. Applications not already on the list need to be added. The assistance I have received has been admirable, but it grows more difficult to maintain the links as more are added every few days.

The next version of Minta, the well known, free MP3 tagging, listing and information tool for OS/2, is going to be released end of March/beginning of April.

As Minta (since v2.00) supports national languages I am looking for people who would like to do a translation of the program.

The language choice for the program has been seperated for the language choice of the online help in the new version, so you can choose if you want to do a translation of the program only (dialogs, menus and some messages) or a full translation (including the online help; that I admit is a bit more work).

Full language support is availabe by now for english, german and dutch, so you can also choose what "base" you want to use for the translation.

If you would like to help, please contact me at thth@gmx.net

You can get more information and your copy of the program at the Minta homepage:

http://www.informatik.uni-trier.de/CIP/thielen/minta/

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

I have created a website that details the procedures that I followed to setup my cable modem to work under OS/2 Warp 4. It can be found at:

http://members.home.net/bhubley/cableintro.html

There is also a link to an article in OS/2 e-Zine that others should find very useful. And if others wish to contribute their experiences in setting up a cable modem with OS/2 I am willing to add to this site.

As you know, Symantec (Norton Anti-Virus), purchased IBM Anti-Virus. As part of that deal, Symantec agreed to maintain updates to previous IBM Anti-Virus versions. However, if you go to the Symantec website, they have made it difficult to find ANY information on updates to versions prior to 2.52, and of course even checking that information urges you to upgrade to the new Norton Anti-Virus for OS/2. The good news is that the updates for older versions 2.51 and below, ARE available. They are on the Symantec FTP site. I found them at this URL:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/ibmav/

Bookmark this page when you get there. Remember that the naming convention for versions 2.51 and below, begin with "old". As an example, the January update is named OLD30CV.ZIP. The Feb. update is due shortly, or may even be there by the time you download. It will be OLD30CW.ZIP.

Abbotsbury Software Ltd. has updated their driver for the Hauppauge WinCast/TV PCI card. The current version is 1.040E. This version corrects a problem in the Settings Notebook and properly sets up the brightness/saturation for GRADD users. You will need to download the entire package, not just the .SYS file, and delete your WinCast ini file (WCAST 1.INI).

I'm happy to announce that the driver is almost ready for general release. The video quality is as good as that of our WinXX drivers. However, the driver still does not support all Hauppauge hardware. Current omissions include FM Radio, Stereo, Dolby and Teletext. Sound support is high on our list of priorities now that most video issues have been cleared up.

IBM UK is currently working on their WarpTV Television application. The original developer is making the changes needed to work with the new drivers and IBM has given us the rights to distribute it. WarpTV is a quality PM application and I would like to thank IBM UK, and the developer for updating it.

The driver set will be freely available to all non commercial users, however we are asking that satisfied customers register their software for a cost of $30. We are planning a CD that can be purchased for that price which will include the drivers, a registered version of WarpTV, possibly the latest IBM FixPack and GRADD drives plus whatever video related software we can find. This is being done primarily for new WinCast users who haven't yet upgraded to the required FixPack and want to get started as quickly as possible.
