/dev/fb0 or /dev/fb0current cannot be found

I have compiled frame buffer support in to the kernel
and compiled the kgicon device(vga). When I insmod the module
it switches to the mode I select vis kgicon_bpp, etc.
I cannot use fbset or any demo with the fbcon ggi 
as the files cannot find /dev/fb0 (/dev/fb0 does not exist).
I am using kernel 2.1.118 and Red Hat 5.1
