Or even a hotkey to change it during runtime. I'm not sure what
would happen if you simply replaced xhook->window with the
root window, but afaik it could be that simple.

On a related note I've been thinking about a "vidmode" target
that would use the XF86 vidmode extension, but not DGA.
It would give the same performance as the X-target, but apps
would run fullscreen without the requiring the program to run as
root.
