mode setting with Mill II

Hi
I am trying to set the display to 1280x1024 in 8 bit color graphmode. The
hardware that I am using is MGA Mill II 8megs and a 21" monitor. All can
handle that resolution at that size.
My problem is that I can only set the display to 640x480 8bit graphmode any
higher resolutions will not be recognized and I will get invalid mode
errors.
I have read the display writers guide but am having problems making much
sense of it... any help would be much appreciated..
