I've been running fbcon + vgafb since 2.1.103, on both MDA and VGA, with
no oopsen here.  I've also used vesafb now and then, and haven't seen an
oops there either.

It must be kgicon doing something slightly wrong... no idea what though.
Unless it's something in the stock kernel (e.g. the initialization
issue) -- I'm using VGER here.
