A last note on this -- I got my setup to work after realizing that if
you enable the SYSCTL interface you have to turn on forwarding
by echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

BTW, does 2.1.108 need the vger patch, or is the black-on-black
problem fixed?
