AFAIK it has improved _much_. I don't read many "it crashes" mails anymore

You need a very recent libtool and automake. Are you using CVS or snaps ?
For CVS you need the automake and run ./autogen.sh before soing configure.

Have fun. And definitely, you should have a look at
degas/lib/libggidemos/3d.c . You will like that one. Promise.
